New Design -- Needs a name
Here are some pics of my unfinished and unentered design for the EMRR Box-O-Parts contest awhile back.
I could use a volunteer to rocsim it using the latest version that does fins attached to pods. Its been flown (if I can find the movie, it'll be attached) and it is very stable. I used 4 steel washers for nose weight to get the c/g in front of the forward fin when fully loaded with an E9. Chris |

I'd go with "Planet Buster". Looks like a missile I saw in a Superman comic years ago.

In the same vein as mycrofte's Planet Buster, how about "Shell Cracker", "Core Sampler", "Ticket Puncher"?
Since it has an X-form fin pattern, how about "Wolverine"?

Jay chimes in...

How about "Octoplex," since it looks like it has 8 fins from head on? Cheers,

Chris, nice design from a box of parts. I will do my best to mock up an Rocksim 9 file for you. I will need a parts list with BT lengths, NC Specs, fin pattern or good side photo with ruler, Motor mount recess, and anything thing else you can think of. I hope you don't mind if I use all Semroc parts . James Pierson NAR# 77907 |

The BT-80 IS 18" The BT-50's are 9" MMT is for an Estes E9 size recessed so end of motor is flush with aft end of BT-80 There are 4 SEMROC Saturn 1b fins at the tail end. I'll jot down the X-Y fin coordinates for the other 2 sets of fins tomorrow C/G with loaded motor is at the leading edge of middle fins which happen to be at 9" from aft end. Nose cone has 4 large metal washers & screw eye setup. |

Ya know that looks an awful lot like the Fliskit Thunderbird.
How about Thunder Chicken? Or...Thunderthud? http://www.fliskits.com/products/ro...thunderbird.htm

RockSim Version
Chris (and all),
Here is the RockSim file for the design. It is only viewable in V9, as it uses pods... Length: 23.50" Diameter: 2.60" (BT-80) Fin Span: 9.54" Weight: 9.43 oz (including 3 oz ballast) Launch Rod: 48" x 3/16" E30-7T.......989'......Dv 30 FPS F24-7W......1170'......Dv 32 FPS F21-6W......1398'......Dv 9 FPS Chris, although you mentioned using the E9, RockSim says you need a launch guide of right at 130" (11') before it reaches safe flight velocity. The Apogee E6 needs 90". When loaded with the E9-4, the CG is located about 1/4" to 1/2" ahead of the LE of the forward fins. This gives the model a 1.66 static margin with the E9-4 loaded.

So, did you ever decide on a name?

Vaguely resembling design elements of the Bloodhound (fins), throw in a Talos-inspired ramjet intake, and add a few extra strap-on ducted ramjets ala Coyote, and a few Sat-1b fins just for fun, and MUTT-4b seems appropriate for a name.
I have a video of the maiden flight in breezy conditions off of a 36" rod. The file size exceeds the upload limits though. It was very stable! Perhaps rocsim doesn't fully account for the stability gained with all those open tubes strapped around the core diameter? Lots of large span fins as well. I have a few different designs I wanted to incorporate the ramjet cone into, but the supply of fin material in the contest box assortment didn't work out. More scratchbuilding added to my list. |
