Default ebay: 1972 Centuri KS-1 Mercury Redstone

I've never seen the Centuri KS-1 Mercury Redstone model offered on ebay before. Does anyone have it or has anyone built it? I'd be interested to know how it differs from the Estes K-41 version.

This kit is virtually identical to the Estes #1921 MR. So, if you know the differences between the 1921 and K-41, you'll know the differences with the KS-1.

The Centuri offering used the injection moulded capsule kit. Estes used the balsa core with paper wraps. The Centuri fins were four parts, the Estes were six parts (including the fin to airframe fairings). Centuri was about 1/34th scale based on their Series 20 . Estes went with a BT-60 and scaled about 1/45th. Of the two the Estes kit was far and away the builders kit since you built just about all the detail parts.

The Estes 1921 re-release is the comparison

Thanks guys! I would have thought the Centuri kit would have been similarto the K-41 and I would have been wrong.

I built the K-41 as a kid and again a couple of years back, and It's still one of my favorites.

Personal opinion is the Centuri kit resulted in a better looking model, all things equal. FAR better looking capsule and tower.

Absolutely agreed. But in fairness one gave you twelve injection moulded parts to build the tower. With the other you received a small bundle of twigs.

Oh, quite true. There is a line somewhere (and it probably varies per person) between challenging yet enjoyable building work and downright boring tedium with sometimes not much 'extra' in the final model to show for the effort.

I think the Estes M-R capsule and their Apollo capsule for their Little Joe II (especially the tower components) kinda fell in the latter category.

Yep. But then I never was one to build the Eiffel Tower from matchsticks either.

I didn't even get a bundle of twigs with mine. It was a strip of wood about 3/4" wide with several dowels about half way cut into it. Not sure what the person packaging it was thinking. I tried cutting them out and rounding them, but as a kid I didn't really have the ability to make them look right with no drill to spin them up in.

tbzep -
You beat me to it!
Any new modeler would appreciate this page from JimZs:
http://www.spacemodeling.org/JimZ/estes/k-41b.tif

Check out the middle column where it says: "Now the Tower and Capsule"

I think they must have wet that wood piece and pressed it between two heated molds.
I built two Estes Redstones and in both kits, both sides of the dowel material were mis-matched!
No matter how I tried to cut through and separate the "dowels", they never turned out round.

The Zooch Redstone is pretty close to the older Estes version at 23.5" tall.
On the Zooch version the fins are an easier sub assembly.
You still build a dowel tower though! Zooch gives you dowels that are ready to glue.
