Original Estes GOONYBIRD Decals (Stickers)
I came across a couple of packages of Estes sticker sheets for their Goonybirds from the early seventies. I opened one and found five sheets of stickers, one for each of the original Goonybirds EXCEPT the Sky Shriek. Has anyone else seen these sets? Anyone know why they were sold in sets like this, and why the sheet for the Sky Shriek would be missing? I suspect that these were simply packaged and sold sometime after the Goonybirds went OOP (does anyone know when that happened?), and that the Sky Shriek sheets were all gone at that time.
I've put the sheets from the opened package on Ebay............and am mentioning this in case anyone here wants to do a clone of one of these rockets. I suspect that these sticker sheets would be difficult (but perhaps not impossible) to clone. I suppose someone who's handy with a computer could scan them and then print them out on label stock............doing the die cut on the sheet would be pretty much impossible, but in my view not necessary anyway as they could be easily cut out with scissors. Any info that anyone has on these would be greatly appreciated. Joe |

I tried them on label stock, but they wash out rather badly, so I printed them off on white Bel Decal paper. Pretty cool find.

Since the "decals" for the Goonies were printed on opaque sticker stock, I'm thinking you could print them on semigloss or gloss presentation paper - that paper is thicker and has a higher brightness than standard label stock. The result should be a better saturation of the ink and should look pretty good (that's why I use presentation paper for my wraps - the color is so much better than anything printed on regular paper, label stock or card stock). You could then cut them out with a hobby knife and just glue them to the painted rocket. A final shot of clear gloss will seal the ink and help keep the "decals" in place.

Sorry, by the way, I just built a Galaxy Guppy last month and used a set of the decals and they worked perfectly-as well as if they were made yesterday. I have so many, I used a sheet of the cold power Yankee Stars to decorate my Big Bertha and others rockets. Actually, Ive used a LOT of them and still have more than Ill ever use. Cant wait to see what they may bring. dannymrmissile |

Oh, I know that - in my post I was more referring to making them look more like the original "sticker decals" that came with the original kits. They were printed on a white adhesive backed label stock and die cut. I was referring back to Bill's post about printing on Avery mailing label stock having a "washed out" look. After all, there are a hundred ways to do something, and I like to point out the ways that some folks might not think of. (To quote Click and Clack: "This guy's thinking outside the box... And the sooner we get back into that box, the better we'll all be! ) Greg |

GOONEYBIRD Decals

Joe How long have you had these? Chances are they came from me! In mid 90s, in store in NY, I found about 30 packs of 10 per pk. still factory sealed of ALL of them(GOONEY BIRDS), except Sky shreik-also VASHION-XS-1, SANDPIPER, and ALL of the COLD POWER ones. I still have-gosh knows how many left-but back then, I traded - even gave away a LOT of them to folks to have. A LOT of them went north from PA to New England states. I still have the reciept from the purchase. Im only sayin its POSSIBLE they came from me as I spread a lot of them around !- All Over the US. glad to see em turn up after all these years. AS I said, Ive got LOTSSSSSSSSSSSSSS more! dannymrmissile. |

Joe, just looked on ebay, theyve gotta be the same ones. They have the same separation spaces between the individual decals per page as mine. They just gotta be!... . They all came in square clear plastic bags sealed w/a set of 4 each, right? dannymrmissile. |
