I read about this. Apparently the pilot's screams were clearly heard as he burned to death after allowing the other passengers to escape. Not sure I'd forget that anytime soon if I were present.

The Liberty Foundation's web site is back up and there is a statement on the front page which can be seen here: http://www.libertyfoundation.org/index.html

Basically they had an in-flight fire (cause still unknown), landed in the cornfield safely with a relatively small fire still burning, got everyone (and stuff) out, then watched as the airplane burned because fire trucks couldn't get to it out in the soft field.

It did NOT crash. Had they been able to put the fire out shortly after they landed, the airplane would've been repairable.
