That does sound like s pretty good way to toughen up small vacuform fins. For bigger models like the Maxi Honest John, John Boren of Estes gave me a suggestion: Fill the perimeter of the fins with a mixture of epoxy and chopped fiberglass strands before joining the halves. I bought a quart container on eBay for $15 shipped. I have not completed my HoJo, but it’s fins are pretty fragile and this should add much needed rigidity.

The only drawback with that method is the heat sometimes generated when epoxy cures. It just might be hot enough to do some damage to the fins. And the extra weight of the epoxy.

Heat damage from epoxy was brought up in the CMR Humpty Dumpty thread. The 5 minute stuff can and will melt styrene - see attached photo. I've read somewhere, maybe on YORF, that the 15 & 30 minute epoxy doesn't generate as much heat... S.

All epoxies cure with an exothermic reaction. The longer the cure time the longer the time the heat is released. 15 and 30 minute epoxies do not get nearly as hot as "fast" 5min epoxy.
They are also far stronger. I would mix in 30% by volume of microballoons when filling the HoJo fins. Far lighter and plenty strong.

Thanks!
My Star Wars kits came across the border in no time flat. Thank you so much!
Now I just need to add a vintage catalog with the Star Wars cover.
