Quick question: Will the decals from one of those vintage kits still be usable? It looks alright—if not a little brittle. I've never tried to use a decal of that age before and I'm considering it.

Another thought--if your vintage decal sheet is one that Sandman at Excelsior Rocketry (see: www.excelsiorrocketry.com ) *doesn't* have in his "Classic Waterslide Decals" lines, you could e-mail him a PDF scan of the decal sheet (or lend him the decal sheet itself to scan) and buy a fresh reproduction of the decal sheet from him. This would make the reproduction decal sheets available to other model rocketeers, which would be a "Win!-Win!-Win!" situation for you, Sandman, and other model rocketeers who like to clone the old kits.

If your Javelin's helical checkerboard roll pattern decal was red (the one in Bazookadale's Javelin kit was black, as was/is the one in Centuri's and Semroc's Snipe Hunter kits), then we classic kit cloners have at least three choices for authentic reproduction Javelin decal schemes--the kit-specific straight-lines red roll pattern decal in Semroc's "Retro-Repro" Javelin kit, the black helical checkerboard roll pattern decal (for the "Retro-Repro" Snipe Hunter kit, the decal sheet for which Semroc also sells separately), and the red helical checkerboard roll pattern decal, which Sandman sells as part of the Centuri Black Widow decal set. (This doesn't include other Javelin decor schemes that appeared in Centuri catalogs, such as this one: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/no...a/72cen010.html .)

Hi blackshire, the decal is black. The model has no motor clip, nor is one mentioned in the instructions. The nose cone is an odd vinyl-like plastic (it's kinda soft) and is orange with a black, hard plastic coupler(?).
A strange thing I noticed this morning—the paint on the nose cone is still tacky after about twelve hours of drying. The body and fins are quite hard and dry. Since I have scanner software problems at the moment, I'll take the decal into work tomorrow and do a hi-res scan, or if he prefers, I'd be glad to send him the actual decal—just let me know. If there are repros available or they can be made from this one, then I might just as well go that route. It's that or I'll try and paint it (or look for repro decals) as it appears on the kit card which, having thought about it, I kind of prefer. Thank you for the suggestions and advice. |
