I've seen a red transparent one - but not recently.

It's currently sitting in a Quest Harpoon. But I'm not sure that's where it started, given that I have another yellow and red Wuest parachute in my parts box.

I've got a 24" red w/fuzzy lines that I think came w/ my executioner.

IIRC the white chutes were pre-John Boren days at Estes.

I just pulled a red one out of a kit recently. I think it may have been the Generic E2X, but I can't swear to it.

Examples - left to right:

Left: solid white 'chute on my Star Stryker - built in June of 2009. (This was back during the brief period when Estes tried to sell actual kits to build at WalMart and before the sale of the company to Hobbico.) I think the kit was probably purchased earlier that year.

Center: A solid red 12 inch parachute on an Alpha I built in 2010. I don't know now if that was the 'chute that came in that particular kit or not.

On the right - a ready-to-fly Athena with a mid 2009 date code and a red 'chute in the package. I also found some bought-on-sale Estes kits with date codes ranging into mid 2010 with the red 'chutes in them, but ones from late 2010 and on with the current designs.

Thanks for the pics and the info!

I seem to remember that there was a website (or a thread) that was focused around which Estes parachutes were being supplied at what time.

I have an Estes white chute in the bag. Here is a picture of the insert. It does say "assembled in China" on the back.

Chutes from China go back a lot farther than the white ones from 2009. Based on some of the older kits I've gotten in my stint as a BAR, they were one of the first components to be sourced in China, long before the entire kits started being manufactured there.

What changed was the standards for lead content in "toys", which drove Estes to the white then red ones before their vendor(s) in China were able to make colorful 'chutes which also met the standards.

While the shroud lines in the white and red 'chutes were kind of dodgy, I really like the red canopies - they're kind of springy in feel and are relatively resistant to not opening when cold, and they show up well in all sky conditions. I would love to be able to get the red translucent canopies with the shroud lines that come on the current Estes 'chutes....but that's a silly request, really.

I have it from an industry insider that at least one LPR/MPR manufacturer here in the US uses Coats & Clark Dual Duty Plus Button & Carpet Thread for their parachutes. I asked if my source was willing to be recognized as the source, and was asked not to.

Button and Carpet thread was certainly the standard for making 'chutes away back in my first rocketry period (1967-74 or so). I've tried to find it and it's not as widely available as it once was. I've also purchased some shroud line material from Semroc a few years ago, which certainly seems to be the same or similar stuff.
