Default Two Finished

Got two finished, both from the mind of Pete Alway.

On the left is an Alway/BMS Arcas that I modified with a longer body tube to create a Super Arcas. The paint job is from Small Sounding Rockets as I couldn't find a clear on-line picture of a Super Arcas. Its Dupli-color black and chrome and Rustoleum florescent orange. That new Dupli-color chrome is spectacular; three light coats and it looks like a foil wrap. I used the foil that came with the kit to refurbish a Centuri Saturn 1b. Scale is 1/4.6. A fun, quick build for mini-power.

Next to it is Cohete-1 or SCT-1, the first Mexican liquid fuel rocket, from the Alway drawing in last years Sport Rocketry. I built it in nominal 1/10 scale (1/9.6) on a BT-58. I cut the fins from trailing edge stock so they taper from tip to root and from leading edge to trailing edge, just like the prototype. Paint is Rustoleum nickel. Also fun.

Nice work. I'll have to keep the DupliColor chrome in mind. Might be useful for a high altitude bird.

A nice pair of models! I love the garish paint scheme on the Super Arcas. Someday I'd like to document that for a future RotW edition (among other things I want to steal from "Small Sounding Rockets").

I'm especially happy to see the first picture I've ever seen of a model of the SCT-1! I first ran into a reference about the rocket in an old Aviation Week when I was working on the original "Rockets of the World," but I had no leads on documentation. At the time I wanted rockets from as many countries as possible so the book would live up to its title.

Anyway, it's gratifying to see that the effort I put into the Sport Rocketry article has paid off with an actual model. Thanks for posting!

Very Nice !
What do they have for power ?
Make sure and give a flight report.

Thanks guys,

The Arcas is 13mm power and the SCT-1 is 18mm power. I will post a launch report as soon as the burn ban is lifted. As you can tell by my yard in the background, we haven't had any rain in months. I have several rockets waiting for a first flight. . . .

Peter, I hope you do get around to an updated edition of RotW. I have very much enjoyed my copy and would be first in line to buy a revision.

I too would be happy to throw a few quatloos Peter's way (by way of NARTS or ARA Press) for the fifth edition of "Rockets of the World," even as a pre-order. I'd love to see a section in it on the Super Arcas (possibly also a round with the ~5:1 tangent ogive No. 8 nose cone; here are a few links: see: http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/752241.pdf and https://www.google.com/search?hl=en...0.0.3RoFFrSGKco ), the Arcturus (see: http://www.oldrocketforum.com/attac...achmentid=26670 and http://www.oldrocketforum.com/attac...achmentid=26671 ), and the Metroc (essentially a "baby Arcas," with swept rhombic fins, see: http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarch...20-%200183.html and https://www.google.com/search?hl=en...0.0.bjVXc3eCBBM ).
