When I went to the WSMC in Baikonur, the team from Uzbekistan were using a cranked generator to launch thier rockets. We asked about it and it was repurposed from a mining explosives detonator. I don't remember them having a misfire the whole week.

The duty cycle on a launch system is so low it makes perfect sense. We should look into more "explosives" technology now that we are totally NOT explosives as ruled by a Federal judge. Don't be shy.

They would crank at the end of the countdown. You get about 5 seconds after that to launch, or the RSOs make a "not ready" call and move to the next person in the queue. If you go before the end of the countdown, you are DQ'd.

Every now and then the old DuPont "Blasting Machines" that look like one of those "Wile E Coyote" Acme deals show up on ebay....they usually go for over $200 though....several good ones on ebay now. One is a 6-D cell capacitive discharge model.

The provided link has one that requires 6 D-cell batteries, it does not have a magneto. The batteries charge capacitors which then in turn provide a high current 'dump' to launch a rocket or whatever other purpose.
