Three old BARS, perfect flying weather, lots of gliders, lots of plastic model conversions, and a few other goodies made for a great launch session. Read the whole story on the blog linked below...

An A10-3T sounds woefully inadequate for that PMC Nike Hercules.
The C in "PMC" lived up to being "Crasher" as usual. Was it "trash bag-n-broom" recovery ??

No, If I recall, it just stuck in the ground and there was no damage to the model!

Wowwwww.
I read it "lawn darted" but figured there was a "poof" of plastic shrapnel after that.

In a short written synopsis about the flight, Jim acknowledged that the A10 is inadequate for the weight and drag of the model, but it can only accommodate a 13mm motor tube that is mounted between the four Nike booster motors. He goes on to say that two-stage operation may be the only chance for viable conversion. It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.

A shame you lost the Star Trooper. A really good looking combo with the booster. That's one you should consider rebuilding, and maybe flying with 1/2 A's. By the way, I can understand the loss of the upper stage, but with the grass so short, how did you lose the booster??

Hi, Mojo,

Neither section landed on the grass field. Since I was a dummy and inadvertently installed a 3 second delay motor in the booster, the whole affair flew quite high before igniting the upper stage and separating. The booster ended up falling into a wild area outside the park boundaries that featured tall weeds and a large expanse of marshy ground populated by cat-tails and water reeds.

Had I grabbed the proper zero delay motor out of the range box, the booster would have landed in the flying field, and the upper stage would not have ignited at such a high altitude. I might have stood a chance at getting that back as well.

In a way, I'm not greatly lamenting the loss of the Star Trooper. It was definitely the 'jinxed' rocket of my fleet. Not one of the five flights it logged was without a problem requiring repair or re-build of some sort.

I may re-build another similar booster section, though. I have some spare fin sheets from a Comanche 3 kit from which I purloined the body tubes and nose for other projects, and I still have my MPC Super-Star clone to use as an upper stage.

Ed, no model rocket bans at Dove Valley?

It’s impossible to fly anywhere up in Fort Collins, the city’s park rules forbid any use of parks for model rockets, as well as schoolyards.

I’ve been going to Pueblo to fly with SCORE, and fly with CRASH when possible, but I really miss having a place to fly locally.

Hi, Lee,

No restrictions at Dove Valley.
Back in 2016, I shot an e-mail off to Arapahoe County Park & Rec. inquiring about flying model rockets at DV. They replied back that, yes, it is permissible as long as it doesn't impact other users of the park (I chuckled at their use of the word 'impact'). Anyway, whenever I fly there I take along a copy of that letter just in case I'm approached by any authorities. I've also flown there when there have been groundskeepers puttering around on their little carts and such. I've never been challenged by any of these folks.

This past weekend, I approached the folks holding the soccer games on the field and let them know that I would be flying some rockets a little ways away. They were good with it as long as there would be no rockets interrupting their game.

Ed,

Very nice that you have permission, and smart to carry that proof. I remember going to that field years ago when our youngest daughter played soccer. Pretty nice, as I recall. Here in Colorado, flying on grass is a real luxury!
