One of these is going to fly at MSFC on the 16th, and I figured I’d run through some calcs to look at motor choice.
http://billsrockets.blogspot.com/20...et-science.html Estes also whipped up a one-off custom SLS at the same scale for the NASA event - quite a change from the Tunick days! Any comments would be appreciated - test flights early next week

I flew mine at our SPAAR launch today on a D10-5. The perfect motor for this rocket, a great flight.

I had read lots of reports that the C12-4 is great for the Saturn V, and based on that I tried it and I had a good flight with it. Good luck. |

I have seven flights on mine now. Four of these are on Q-Jet C12-4s. Unless you really need to go higher than ~400 feet, this is the perfect motor for the model. The other three flights are two on an Estes C6-3, which actually is acceptable (I don't know where the horror stories are coming from) and one on a Q-Jet D16-4. As with other models I've flown both C and D Q-jets in, the added thrust of the D means more speed which means more drag. That, coupled with the Q-Jet D being ~13 N-s means it doesn't go much higher at all, but it gets there faster.
I've seen one other fly on a D10. That got out in a hurry.

EDITED! I just realized I may have disclosed info to the public that should not have been, so I edited this post. As Gilda Radner would say...…….. NEVER MIND

Yup, the QJet C12-4 is a good match for this rocket. Plenty high enough to look impressive but not so high you can’t watch the entire flight. If you have a relatively calm day the Estes C6-3 would be great for a demo launch, the slower lift-off and white smoke from the BP looks really nifty. |

Here’s a flight report - the C12-4 did the job.

OK, for those of you who tried to get the free poster and clicked on the link in the addendum in the kit, the URL is incorrect. I tried it with my first kit, got a missing page message, and assumed they were all out of the posters.
WRONG! Ordered a second kit recently and got an email from the vendor showing the CORRECT URL. So contact your vendor or Estes customer service for the correct link. They still have 'em in stock. Just got a notice that mine is on its way.
