Default Cylon Raider

We've had the BSG Viper and Laser Torpedo since 1979 and the boxes showed a Cylon Raider with a kit number but I've never seen one.

Did Estes ever release the kit?

Here's an answer from Mike Dorffler in response to Initiator001's same question with bonus info on The Black Hole's Cygnus Probe:

Our marketing guys went and made a licensing deal with Hollywood on the Galactica series. They signed us up for the Viper and the Cylon without consulting us guys at all. We got a memo telling us what they had done and we needed to get started. Keith Niskern started the Viper while the rest of us sratched our heads how to do the Cylon. An undercambered semi-disk just isn't that aerodynamic, especially when it has bump like things all over the top side.

But we gave it a shot thinking maybe we could find a way to make it drive straight. We made a relatively accurate pattern and vacuum-formed several pieces for flight testing. We found right away it was a dead end to make go straight with the motor underneath. It would chase you all over the parking lot. But we already knew that was going to happen - we needed to show the marketing guys first hand what they bhad gotten us into. So we tried to sell them on the idea of putting it on the side of a long black BT-50 like a big base fin, and added a sub-fin for lateral stability. That was about all we could do. Marketing frowned, but presented it to Hollywood who of course said no. That was the end of the Battlestar Cylon. Sorry guys.

The Cygnus Probe got killed by the Disney marketing people too. This was after we had actually produced about 5,000 kits and were in the warehouse ready to ship. Disney, after the initial approvals in the early work, decided to change their mind, They didn't like Wayne's rendition afterall, hated the kit panel, and didn't like the decal either. They decided it wasn't represenative enough of the movie vehicle and since they had the final word, it was killed. We had considered changing the name and repackaging it but decided it wouldn't work. End of Cygnus. Sorry again, guys.

Thanks for the quick answer! Guess that explains why the Cylons needed 3 of them to fly it.

That is why I never liked some of the movie kits, like the Death Star. You end up with an ungainly tube sticking out.

The only sane way to make a Cylon Raider would look like an axe.

Quite true, but most studio models aren't meant to fly, either... they're just supposed to look good on screen...

When you toss aerodynamics into the mix along with the CP/CG relationship necessary for a stable flight model, sometimes you just have to take 'liberties' (and add liberal amounts of noseweight) to get it to fly...

I've always been somewhat amazed that they got the TOS "Enterprise" to fly as a rocket and stay in one piece... LOL

Your right-- a Cylon Raider WOULD look like a flying battle-axe... at least it'd fly handle first... LOL

The various spacecraft in question wouldn't be such far fetched designs as long as they stayed in space, but there were episodes where they flew in planetary atmospheres.

True, but then lets not forget that they ARE supposed to be futuristic advanced technology type stuff-- we already have AIRCRAFT that are unstable and require a flight computer making constant minute adjustments to keep them controllable in atmospheric flight... in fact, instability is a hallmark of a good fighter design....

I want someone to pseudo-clone the never-existed Cylon Raider kit.

One thing I never quite understood about the classic BSG-- why even bother having THREE cylons crawl into the Raiders to fly them-- why not simply "install their brains" in a computer control "black box" and do away with the flight cabin altogether?? Use the extra room of the crew cabin for larger fuel tanks, more weapons, etc... Much like the "droid fighters" in Star Wars?? Not like there's any big shortage of robots in the Cylon Empire....

Plus, Baltar flew with two pilots in a couple episodes (one against the Pegasus and the other he was captured by the Colonials) and also Starbuck and Apollo flew a Raider back to infiltrate onto a base star to disable it so the Viper wings from Galactica could destroy it... My question is--

WHY INSTALL HEAVY LIFE SUPPORT EQUIPMENT FOR ORGANIC BEINGS INTO A VEHICLE DESIGNED, BUILT, AND FLOWN BY ROBOTS?? Without a life support system, it pretty much eliminates the possibility of organics slipping aboard using your own craft...

Things that make you go "DUH!" LOL Later! OL JR

With servos getting smaller and microcontrollers more powerful, we already have helicopter models a beginner can fly. The day will come when a flying model of a ultra-modern fighter jet or even a Cylon Raider is possible.
