Those were some bad days.

Agreed. The Dude was the epitome of Estes morphing into a toy company from a hobby company. I'm glad to see the morph back to its roots.

Total waste of perfectly good D12 engines.
Burn the "kit" and use the engines in something worthwhile.
REALLY.

Cost of launching The Dude three times with the kids on a calm Summer's day at the club: The Dude $9.95 + shipping off of EBay, plus $8 and tax for 3 D's at Hobby Lobby. The scorned looks from the cranky old rocket dudes: PRICELESS!

Thank you Estes for The Dude, Spaceship One E, Cosmos Mariner, and the RTF X-15, all of which have made these forums and launches all over the world much more exciting.

I recall seeing a few Dude flights. I guess it flew - much like a brick flies in that it is not on the ground and is moving.

Yep, the Dude flew....Pigs will fly too given enough thrust but does not mean they should.
Stupid idiotic concept that should have NEVER made it out of a design studio.
The mgmt. that green-lighted that class-A1 TURD product should have been summarily given a LONG RIDE on a LARGE BOOT off a SHORT PIER, followed up immediately with a keelhauling for good measure.
Whomever okayed it either had a major brain-fahrtage the size of texas or was brain-dead.
REALLY.

Pigs fly great, I know. The "Dude" was dumb, I know that too, but the kids loved it. A BIG rocket going up, and a big rocket coming down with a stupid little chute. Was fun. Just because the "purists" think it sucked doesn't mean everyone thought it sucked. Because it's not an AMRAAM or a Bull-pup, or some other perfect-to-scale missile shuttle surface-to-air something or other that didn't fit the old mans dichotomy, it was stupid. what's it all about? Answer that, and dumb things like the "dude" make more sense.

It got my kids hooked, good enough for me. Sorry you never had the pleasure, and thankful all the same.

The Dude was a rocket shaped toy; that much is true, but it served as a vehicle for the conversation to take place and some learning to begin. Even a water rocket serves the purpose. If I can spend an hour with kindergarten kids in talking about and flying an Arcas then there might be something coming of if. The benefit the Dude provided was it was big enough to see and track so kids didn't simply see a cloud of smoke and a parachute drifting downrange.

I wonder what the highest power engine anyone was ever to rig a The Dude to fly on?
