Those vac-formed fins are pretty tough!!! On my Centuri model, they survived a fall after a sky-writing episode onto a wet soccer field that stuck one fin into the muddy ground Lesson learned: don't fly with a 29mm motor without the clear fins!!!!

Heh, heh, I learned that about acetone this morning.

How about laquer thinner?

I tried the Testor's liquid cement again. I'll check how the joints held up tonight.

Either way, I'm going to make some slip-on clear fins. I have a sheet of clear butyrate around somewhere.

I believe I glued mine on with Testor's glue (orange tube)...I built mine before I knew about Tenex or other liquid cements.

FWIW, here is a tracing of the slip-on Centuri fins from my kit...

I use enough nose weight to where SCALE fins are enough.
It demands MORE POWER.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

I used Testor's tube cement (orange) on my Centuri Saturn 1B and V when I was a kid, but that stuff had some heat to it. Today's version isn't worth spit.

I fairly recently built one of my Maxi V-2 reissues with Tenax-7R. Amazing stuff!!!

Unfortunately, you can't find it anymore. Next best thing is probably Plastruct Plastic Weld, Micromark "Same Stuff", or Ambroid Pro Weld. If you want to go bulk, grab a quart of MEK, which is probably more like Plaststrut.

Main ingredient for Tenax, Same Stuff, and Ambroid is methylene chloride, IIRC. I think Plastruct is mostly MEK. Some folks like Plastruct better because it flashes off a little slower than Tenax and Ambroid. I've never tried them, so I don't know. YMMV.

Plaststrut also makes a product called Bondene, but I've never seen anyone talk about it.

Great, thanks! That's easier than I thought. I somehow pictured "folded" fins, like a taco shell, that fit over the exitsting fins.

I ordered a set of injection molded fins. I might add through-the-wall tabs to them; just 1/4", enough to protrude to the inner side of the tube, so I can add epoxy fillets.

On the Little Joe II build threads (either here or on TRF, I don't remember which) George or James illustrate using a dowel sandwiched between the fin halves to form a tab to glue into the body. I thought that rather clever.

I have a set of the Saturn V fins and like pictured on the Estes site, they are two halves glued together like LJII so adding a tab should be straight forward.

Your imagination is pretty close for classic Estes kits. The original Estes Saturn V had slip on fins made of two plastic sheets. The edges were stuck together with clear dope. (Steps 57 and 58. Also step 13 in countdown checklist)
