Cylon Raider
We've had the BSG Viper and Laser Torpedo since 1979 and the boxes showed a Cylon Raider with a kit number but I've never seen one.
Did Estes ever release the kit? Randy www.vernarockets.com |

Here's an answer from Mike Dorffler in response to Initiator001's same question with bonus info on The Black Hole's Cygnus Probe:

Thanks for the quick answer! Guess that explains why the Cylons needed 3 of them to fly it.

That is why I never liked some of the movie kits, like the Death Star. You end up with an ungainly tube sticking out.
The only sane way to make a Cylon Raider would look like an axe. |

Quite true, but most studio models aren't meant to fly, either... they're just supposed to look good on screen... When you toss aerodynamics into the mix along with the CP/CG relationship necessary for a stable flight model, sometimes you just have to take 'liberties' (and add liberal amounts of noseweight) to get it to fly... I've always been somewhat amazed that they got the TOS "Enterprise" to fly as a rocket and stay in one piece... LOL Your right-- a Cylon Raider WOULD look like a flying battle-axe... at least it'd fly handle first... LOL Later! OL JR

The various spacecraft in question wouldn't be such far fetched designs as long as they stayed in space, but there were episodes where they flew in planetary atmospheres.

True, but then lets not forget that they ARE supposed to be futuristic advanced technology type stuff-- we already have AIRCRAFT that are unstable and require a flight computer making constant minute adjustments to keep them controllable in atmospheric flight... in fact, instability is a hallmark of a good fighter design.... I want someone to pseudo-clone the never-existed Cylon Raider kit.

One thing I never quite understood about the classic BSG-- why even bother having THREE cylons crawl into the Raiders to fly them-- why not simply "install their brains" in a computer control "black box" and do away with the flight cabin altogether?? Use the extra room of the crew cabin for larger fuel tanks, more weapons, etc... Much like the "droid fighters" in Star Wars?? Not like there's any big shortage of robots in the Cylon Empire....
Plus, Baltar flew with two pilots in a couple episodes (one against the Pegasus and the other he was captured by the Colonials) and also Starbuck and Apollo flew a Raider back to infiltrate onto a base star to disable it so the Viper wings from Galactica could destroy it... My question is-- WHY INSTALL HEAVY LIFE SUPPORT EQUIPMENT FOR ORGANIC BEINGS INTO A VEHICLE DESIGNED, BUILT, AND FLOWN BY ROBOTS?? Without a life support system, it pretty much eliminates the possibility of organics slipping aboard using your own craft... Things that make you go "DUH!" LOL Later! OL JR

With servos getting smaller and microcontrollers more powerful, we already have helicopter models a beginner can fly. The day will come when a flying model of a ultra-modern fighter jet or even a Cylon Raider is possible. Bill
