Default Launch report: TORC Launch, South Charleston, OH - 3/31/12

Okay, first the good news: 9 successful flights on the day.
Now, the bad news: 4 rockets were damaged in some way on the day.
Finally, the worse news: 2 of the rockets damaged were by CATO.

Yeah, the day started for me with the USS America on a C11-3. This would be the first ever flight for this rocket that took me nine years to finish, and I was pretty pumped.

I had planned to start the day off with it on a C11, then try it on a D12, then finally an E9. That probably won't be happening now.

The C11 is about a third of the way through the body tube, the paint is bubbled, and the inside of the rocket is scorched badly enough to be in danger of crumbling in spots near the tail. I'll know more tomorrow in the daylight, but I don't expect the news to be good.

Ouch. I hate it when that happens.

Looks bad at the moment. The tube is distorted at the bottom and unusually crispy.

With eleven flights on the day, this is likely to be a slow process.
Second flight was the first for the Excelsior Der Fat Max.

No problems here. Textbook flight and recovery. Just what the doctor ordered after the USS America incident.

Oh, what a relief it is.

Oh CRAP! Sorry about the USS America. I haven't been hearing of any failures of the C11's.

One thing I've done a few times in the past with special rockets I really care a lot about is to open a pack of motors and fly the first two in a rocket I don't care too much for. Hopefully if the first two don't let go, the third won't either.

At least you got some cool pics of the C11 catastrophe. If you had started with the E9, the cruise missile flight and inevitable crash would have been too far away for good action photos.

All of my E9 flights were great. 7 out of the 11 flights were E9s and all left the pad with authority. I attached a couple of keychain cameras to the Nova SS. The one facing forward was a waste, but the downward facing one got some nice video. I'll post the Youtube link when I get it uploaded.
I was expecting that C11 flight to be vanilla, too. Imagine my surprise. Still beat a day at work.

Both of my bookend flights CATO'd, the USS America leading off, and the Centuri Design Contest X-Wing in the last spot of the day.
