[QUOTE=A Fish Named Wallyum]Known locally as "monkey brain".

We knew them as Indian oranges. Great for battle ammunition or to try to "ring" power lines.

Ran into a snag today.

Very windy here in Michigan today. Winds gusting to 45 mph!

Lost power for about 6 hours. It just came back on so nothing more was done today.

Now for the fins.

Honestly they are the hardest part but that's probably because I make it that way.

First the fin stock has to be cut from balsa wedges I cut off of balsa block that will be turned into nose cone.

I have a big box of them so I can mess up a few.

I determine the thickness and sand one wedge to the correct shape on my belt sander. This one is the "master" and all the rest get marked to the correct size.

Then they are cut close to the right thickness on the band saw, I am very very careful on this step. A band saw can be very dangerous, especially with a sharp new blade!

After the fins are cut to the rough size they get finished on my belt sander so they are all the exact same thickness.

Back to the band saw they get cut to the elliptical shape then back to the belt sander and stack sanded so they are all identical.

Finally for the basic fins they are given a rough airfoil shape on my smaller Delta bench sander.

Then it's hand sanding to the final shape for all six fins.

I was also experimenting with stains so the balsa fins will look better next to all the pretty woods on the rocket body, nose and tail cones.

I came up with a maple stain/polyurethane combination product I had in stock.

I think that will accent the other woods nicely.

Now the last pic is something I'm still playing with.

The fillets!

The Sprint is supposed to have large blended fillets but the woods I'm using obviously rule out wood filler.

I still have to work on that part.

...and when you are done, you can put some Pledge on it, and not that pedestrian stuff with the word "future" in the name...

Had another hurdle to overcome.

The nose cones are freakin' HEAVY!!!

The Osage Orange is the heaviest at 3.4 oz and the Black Walnut is not far behind at 2.7 oz.

I need to hollow them out!

I have a little jig I use. It consists of a short section of body tube with a 3/4" thick centering ring. The ring has a 1" hole centered in it.

The reasoning is that I drill out nose cones with a Forstner bit.

Forstner bits drill nice clean "relatively" flat bottom holes. And unlike twist drills they are guided by their sides not a point in the center. That's the reason for the 3/4" centering ring. To guide the drill bit to the center.

I also had to make a holding fixture for the nose cones out of foam so I could hold them upright and tightly without marring the finish.

Well...I have done this before.

It's not easy but then...I'm good!

Slow and steady...

The black walnut cone drilled out from an initial weight of 2.7 oz to 1.8 oz.

The Osage Orange went from 3.4 oz. down to 2.0 oz.

I'm really enjoying this!

I have been busy with some custom order (as usual) some of my own personal projects and a busy family week.

I did find time for a quick experiment.

A "Black Walnut" veneer launch lug.

Easier than I thought to do.

I sprayed the veneer with window cleaner, let it soak in and get the wood soft, then roll it into a tight tube...sloooooooowly so it doesn't crack...then secure it with tie wraps until it drys.
When I removed the tie wraps it held it's shape.

TADA!!! a Black Walnut launch lug!

That's realy cool!

Personally, I would have cheated and used a cinnamon stick (it IS wood, technically.)

Plus, the rocket would be fragrant!
