Saturn V SHOULD have taken 3x24mm !
Why the shorter K29 Saturn 1B got 4 engines but the LARGER Saturn V got only 3 is a real mystery to me. Any insight on that one Doc ? Powering anything 3" in diameter LET ALONE 4" on a single D12 or even an E12 results in a LAME-O flight, PERIOD. One of those X-prize kits was a 2x18mm cluster also.

I believe that K-29 Saturn 1b was actually 1/70th size, but regardless, concerning the mass point taken.

Yeah...know the K29 S1B is 1/70, but my point was the SV was larger in length by about 7-8 ins. It should have been at least 4 if not 5 engines. At one point Estes listed 4xA8-3 as suitable for the K29 Saturn 1B. What an idiotic idea. Total impulse of ONE C engine with a 3 second delay. Sounds like an insta-crash after a 50' apogee flight. ANYTHING that big should have a 4xC cluster minimum. A 4xC5-3 flight is actually quite nice.

Real simple. When the Saturn 1B came out, the biggest single stage motor Estes had was the B.8-4*. By the time the Saturn V came out, they were making C6-3's. *They had a C.8-0, but no C's with ejection charges.

I would suspect too that Estes got more than one complaint from customers that FOUR engine clusters were just too hard to light successfully on a routine basis. We don't think much about it now, but ignitor technology circa 1969 wasn't quite as reliable as it is today and I'm sure Vern's mailbox got filled with more than one letter stating how they crashed their 1b because one or more motors failed to ignite.
