The second question is what color is that? The most famous International Orange is the color used on the Golden Gate Bridge, which has been the same for 70 years. This color is sort of a darker rusty orange. Actually this color looks like photos of Mars (of course, in 1968 we did not have photos of Mars!). There also is an International Orange that was apparently used "in the aerospace industry" - which would make sense as the one to go with except that is too bright and does not look like what Estes used. Then there is one that is "used in engineering" - but it is very red. Or, was there some other readily available paint on the market called International Orange? Did kids use spray paint in 1968? Wouldn't Estes recommend colors that would have been easy for kids in the 60's and 70's to get?

Here are a couple links on the color:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_orange

http://encycolorpedia.com/search?q=international+orange

Does anyone know any history around this Estes color? I would love to know the original intention of the minds over in Penrose in the late 60's.

Thanks for your help,

Ben

I don't recall Estes ever selling Pactra dope.............if they did, it was before my time. They DID, however, sell Testors dope in International Orange.............see page 62 of the #651 (1966) Estes catalog.

I can tell you by looking at the Brodak chart. Give me a few mins. Not interested in selling any though. I only stockpile Aero Gloss for my own use. I think there may be some Cub Orange on ebay though. There was a few days ago.

Here below is a pic of Midwest Aero Gloss Cub Orange. It appears to be still available from them direct. It is one of about a half-dozen colors they still have.

I also have two 4oz bottles of this Testors Dope. They changed the color name to "Competition Orange". Testors still offers this color in spray enamel that is available at any Michaels or Hobby Lobby store in their 'regular' (not model master) enamel line.

On the Brodak chart, the Testor's is closest to their Bellanca Orange. The Aero Gloss Cub Orange is closest to Cessna Orange

Great, but are you confident that the competition orange and cub orange are both the same color as the original Testors Butyrate Dope International Orange? Have you compared them?

thanks for your help on this,
Ben

I'm positive the Competition Orange Testors is the same as the old international orange color. The enamel and dope look exactly the same as the pic of the international orange.
My digital camera took a dump or would post a pic.

If any of you guys want a significant challenge (but a real rewarding one), check out my 3X Mars Lander Kit - and pass the word. More than any other group you all appreciate an "original" build, and that is what I have tried to do.

What engines has your 3X mars lander flown on ?
Sounds great but a little out of my price range.
Need a "Beta tester" ?

Yeah, she's not a low cost "plans only" kit. Most everything is fab'd to size already. I flew her once so far on a K650 Smokey Sam - flew great, even with 20 -25mph side winds. I probably should not have pushed the button in that wind, but after years of development and a 9 month build, it's hard to sit on the pad and not want to give her a go. Data shows about 1300 feet, though it sim'd at 1900-2000. I attribute the lower flight to the wind. I have a couple beta testers already, but we are really past the beta testing (though this design has been beta tested for 40 years!).
