Talking Jay's "Mu-Tater"

From the "Scrounged-Up Designs" thread:

I originally named this rocket "Mutator," since I morphed it from a Centuri Taurus RockSim file I'd whipped up a while back. But since I'm from Idaho, *and* I have a sick and twisted sense of humor... I present to you the "Mu-Tater."

Cheers,

It looks like an interesting design.

I wonder how it would look if you removed the bulkheads around the extra tubes and blended them back into the main body? The bulkhead just don't seem very aerodynamic and kind of ruin the lines for me.

Jay, I like the way it looks. But the single motor tube at the back looks kinda lonely. Maybe you oughtta move some of those tubes to the back

Thumbs up

I think Doug is right Jay, the rear of the Mutator does need something. Might try a nozzle lookin thing like on the Neptune Lander. It will hide the motor and gives a vintage look as well.

Just my 2 cents worth, JP

From the Centuri "Photon Probe" thread:

Using RockSim 8, I plugged a 3x18mm motor mount into the Mu-Tater, and came up with the following figures:

Mu-Tater

3x18mm motor mount

Motors / Max. Alt / Dv

3x A8-3 - 328 ft. - 28 fps
3x B6-6 - 750 ft. - 16 fps
3x C6-7 - 1433 ft. - 17 fps

1x24mm motor mount

C11-5 - 520 ft. - 9 fps
D12-5 - 1040 ft. - 23 fps
E9-6 - 1600 ft. - 5 fps

Given those figures, I'd just stick with the original 24mm mount. But I suppose I *could* include a "Doug Sams Cluster-Obsessed" Motor Mount Option.

Thanks for the feedback, Doug!

Cheers,

Thanks for the feedback, Doug and James!

As far as I'm concerned, the jury's still out on adding anything at the "back end" of the Mu-Tater (although Doug *could* do a 3x18mm motor mount instead of the original 1x24mm mount). I guess I'll just have to build one and see.

Lemme tell ya, though... I'm gonna have Carl fire up his Krellvinator (sp.?) for those fins and vanes.

Cheers,

Jay, I'm pretty sure that it's not the altitude and stuff that matters to Doug, it's seeing how many motors he can shove into a given rocket.

Hi, Jay,

Actually, I was thinking of a cluster more along the lines of the mid-section - having a mixture of tubes, some of which extend beyond the confines of the BT-60. Something like this:

Here's one with 4x18's around a central 18. In this case, the BT-60 was slotted to fit around the outboard tubes. But you could also just stop the BT-60 at the top ends of the outboard motor tubes - sort of like in the mid-section of the Mu-Tater - but make them more aero.

Here's one where some beveling was added to the forward ends of the outboards to blend them in a little.

With clusters like this, you can always just fly it on the central motor, but when you're feeling jiggy, load it up

However, use a burn string then since only the central is deploying the laundry.

Doug

Ya know, it's sorta like smoking. It didn't seem all that interesting when I started, but now it's hard to quit
