Another scale question for Ye Olde, this time about the SLS
I was asked to make a nose cone of the Orion capsule shroud to fit a BT-80.
The Orion shroud, I assume, is the same size as the MLAS shroud (OK, I could be wrong about that ) but the MLAS was 216.6" O.D. Now if I make an Orion Capsule Shroud to fit a BT-70 (2.217" O.D. ) that would make the shoud very very close to 1/100th scale. (actually 1/97.699594 scale...close enough.) I would need a main body tube size of 3.33" . Actually for 1/97th scale a 3.25" tube would be perfect. Does anyone know the final diameter of the main booster body of the SLS? The Shuttle main tank is the basis for the SLS, I guess and it's diameter is 333". Is that the diameter of the SLS booster? Or am I wrong on the Shuttle tank size and the SLS final size. I attached a pic of a BT-1012 shroud and escape tower.

Be like the senators who designed it and arbitrarily decide what diameter it should be......

I'm not in the government so I want to do it correctly. Wait...was that political? I was once called into "the principal"s" office at that other forum for stating that being a science adviser to congress was one of the worst jobs in this country so I have to be careful.

here is NASA's SLS Page ... they are using the same diameter as the shuttle ET (8.4 meters) so with foam it probably comes pretty close to 333 inches.
If you noodle around I believe there are some rough overall dimensions...the service module behind Orion has changed a few times, and ISTR that the upper stage design is in flux right now and could change... EDIT: I wish NASA would quit showing this rocket with the black and white "Apollo" paint scheme...it will be pumpkin orange on the core just like the shuttle tank, but their pretty pictures hearken back to the "the good old days" to fool Congress |

Thanks! Ok, that's got some dimensions. It's what I had but I couldn't find my source. It says 27.6 feet or 331". Close enough to 333". Maybe it's that 1" of foam.

ET structural diameter 331" with 1" of foam (typical) for 333" OD.
Intertank 335" with 1" of foam for 337" OD. MLAS.... sigh, unless a person is building a model of that alone, forget that thing ever existed . Do not base anything of the future to anything about MLAS. - George Gassaway

LOL, George, I got the 333" figure from your shuttle page. I couldn't remember until your post. As for the MLAS. I made demo models of the capsule and shroud for NASA Langley using their engineering drawings of the Orion capsule and the size given me was a capsule diameter of 198" and the MLAS shroud was to be 216.6" in diameter. Of the two pdf's attached one shows the Orion capsule . The other is from me as approval drawings. The third pic is the 1/20th scale models I made for NASA. Now, George, if you have a more accurate dimension of the Orion shroud please tell me. Otherwise I am just guessing a shroud for the MLAS and the final Orion shroud should be pretty close to the same size.

This is what I've been doing on a lazy Saturday.
The first (Orion 3) picture shows my 1/100th scale Orion Shroud and escape tower compared to the Apollo Capsule and tower. Orion 2 shows the Apollo Capsule, Orion Shroud and the Orion Capsule all the same 1/100th scale. The third pic, Orion 1 show just where I keep the Orion Capsule...under the shroud. The Orion Capsule and the shroud were made from one piece of wood. Now I just need to figure out what they will go on. Coming up maybe in 2017 is the Orion Launch Abort Test with a Peacekeeper booster. Or maybe something else. I just hope that Orbital Sciences changes the name from "Abort Test Booster" to Little Joe III and add some fins!

How about a possible new kit?

A kit of what? All I have are some nose cones so far. I'd like to do a Little Joe III but I'm waiting to see what Orbital Sciences plans to do.
