Tubing Coupler #20 2.00" Long SEM-HTC-20 1 $1.79

So $32.11 in Semroc parts. You need parachute, launch lugs and elastic.

I'll do a build thread when the parts come in.

Here's one I did based on BT-50. I opted for no "SS-520-4" decal... Sorry for the display-case photo!

Have you considered kitting it? Balsa fins and nose cone would be fine, but 3D printed *or* cast resin fins and nose cone (either hollow-cast "pseudo blow-molded" [even roto-casting it by hand works, see: http://www.ninfinger.org/models/rms...resin_cast.html ], or solid-cast with micro-bulb filler [the screw eye can be "investment cast" into it] would be easy to make), and:

A "3-in-1," builder-customizable kit could be built as either an S-520, an SS-520, or the SS-520-4 or -5 satellite launch vehicles. The SS-520 or SS-520-4/5 model could also have, if the builder desired, a live, spin-stabilized second stage (or a live, spinning second stage with an "inert" third stage, for an SS-520 SLV round model). The second stage would be spun by the canted first stage fins before separation, the second stage's motor would be ignited via gap-staging, and the first stage could be streamer-recovered using Evan "Buzz" Nau's simple gap-staged booster recovery system (it utilizes a rear-ejected motor mount with a vented tube that extends between the first stage and second stage motors [see: http://www.oldrocketforum.com/attac...achmentid=40183 ]).

All interesting ideas. No, I never considered kitting it. I just don't think the interest would be there. The Lambda-4S is far more visually interesting (IMO), and even it has sold slowly. Then again, I've always pursued a very limited niche market...

Thank you. Japan might be a market for it, as they even buy a lot of launch vehicle and spacecraft plastic model kits (the Lambda-4S, H-2, IKAROS, Tenma, Hayabusa, etc.), which--even when depicting U.S. rockets and spacecraft, never sold spectacularly here. Aoshima makes a lot of their plastic kits of launch vehicles and spacecraft. Even paper models of Japanese launch vehicles (some of which are made for optional conversion to model rocket power; some of them are downloadable from websites) are popular there.

Well,

A completely new computer later (catastrophic hard drive failure), here's a couple of pictures of my SS-520.

Rocket is 1/10 scale; ST-20 based with Semroc baffle under a coupler and a really nice 3:1 Semroc nose cone that is made up of four different pieces of balsa glued together. Alway Rockets of the World drawing and pictures of the orbital vehicle from the Internet. Power is 24mm. Top-Flight parachute. Model is just under a meter tall.

The first picture shows the tubes prior to assembly.

The second picture shows the painted rocket under this evening's red Texas sunset. I was surprised at how red the picture came out. It's from the smoke from the forest fires in Arizona. Six colors of Rustoleum paint over Duplicolor primer. From the top, in order of appearance: Gloss Black, Chrome, Khaki, Bright Silver, Matte Nickel, Florescent Orange and Gloss White. No decals for the lettering, yet.

I'll take a picture with more 1/10 rockets in the morning.

That's a pretty 'un--thank you for updating your progress on this model! As much as I like film photography, I must admit that pictures of rockets with fluorescent red, red-orange, and yellow components often yield strange--as opposed to what our eyes see "in person"--color intensities and saturations (often in color photographs reproduced in older books and magazine issues), while your digital photographs are neither too "flat" nor "too blazingly vivid" in their reproduction of the fluorescent bands.

Beautifully done. Wow, six colors. You must have a lot of patience (and masking tape). Thanks for sharing.

Here's a fun 1/10 scale picture. All of the rockets are within a couple of decimal points of 1/10 scale. I have three manufacturers: Estes, Centuri and Semroc plus scratch built and I have four countries represented: U.S, Canada, Mexico and Japan.

The rockets are (from left): SS-520-5, Centuri Nike-Smoke, Estes Sandhawk, Estes Patriot, Estes Black Brant III, Cohete-Uno, WAC Corporal and Semroc Tomahawk.

I have some other 1/10 scalers in various states on the work bench including Semroc Nike-Tomahawk, both Semroc Aerobees, a scratch Nike-Ajax, TLP Nike-Hercules and Pershing, Semroc parts for Nike -Deacon, -Cajon, -Asp, and -Apache. I remain hopeful that Randy will create ST-17 tubing so I can do various Black Brants. Honest John/Taurus would be BT-70 in this scale.
