For wood I have gotten away from using FNF or sanding sealer and apply several coats of light gray automotive primer Rust-oleum #2081830. I get 12oz rattle cans from Walmart for less than $4.00 each. The problem with this primer it is not compatible with Krylon lacquer so you have to use an enamel finish over it. Enamels are more difficult to work with than lacquers, they take a long time (days) to dry as opposed to 30 minutes for a heavy coat of lacquer, and hence are more prone to drips and runs. I have learned how to apply the Rust-oleum enamels and get a good smooth finish, it just took a bit of practice. For plastic and other highly detailed surfaces I use Rust-oleum painters touch 2X ultra cover flat white primer #249058; again this paint is only compatible with other enamels, not Krylon lacquers. In fact I haven't found a good primer for Krylon, their new Colormaster primer crazes styrene plastic and takes a long time (days) to dry.

Do you have a smell-o-vision computer when you place your odor online? How does the Brodak sealer compare with the Deft laquer sanding sealer that is more commonly found in hardware stores? |

The main aroma one notices in dope vs hardware store lacquer is MIBK in the solvent package.

My local hardware stores no longer carry Deft Laquer sanding sealer, just the waterborne stuff. When Home Depot did carry it, I tried it on balsa and it did not work as well as the Aerogloss or Brodak sealers. I also buy my airplane supplies from this small company, good service. Go to youtube and type in Brodak manufacturing tour.

Brodak's dope products are actually re-packaged full-scale Randolph dope.
I believe Sig dopes were also, but their sanding Sealer had a far different solvent package.

Here is my completed vintage Estes Defender, as you can see the 3 coats of Brodak sealer did a great job on the fins. I sprayed with old Krylon gloss white and Royal Blue. Onto my next vintage build.

Pretty cool that Brodak has control-line airplanes, too. I used to fly those a long time ago. I still have a couple of Cox .049 engines, probably totally seized up. I guess that is a good trade-off to spend twice as much on the product if it works better than twice as good in saving you sealing and sanding time. It may take 4-6 coats of Deft sanding sealer on balsa with lots of sanding in between, but sounds like you can get good results with 2-3 coats of the Brodak sealer in many of your builds, give or take. |

Control line is where Brodak started. CL builders hung on to dope-based finishes long after RC builders for the most part had abandoned them. Put a seized Cox .049 in a can or jar of glow fuel and let it sit there for awhile to un-seize it. Depending on which .049 it is (a reed valve or front rotary valve engine) it may need a bit more TLC to get back in running shape.</thread drift>
