Default 4-6-08 Launch Photos (dialup beware)

My son and I decided to take advantage of the warm sun this afternoon and fly a few. We started out with my Quest Superbird on a B4-4.

Up next was my son's scratch Ranger. He built it with a 24mm mount and used an adapter to fly it on a B6-4. It flew twice today.

Next was my Cherokee Goon and Semroc Aerobee Hi. Unfortunately, I missed the liftoff them.

My son decided to fly his scratch BT-60 sized Aerobee as a single stage the first time around. It was B6-4 powered on this flight.

Next came his Dynastar Snarky. He flew it on a C11-3. It ejected well past apogee, but the flight was 100% successful.

Last but not least, we decided to fly the gap staged Aerobee Hi. It was a good flight, but we didn't put a protective cover on the booster and it got burned pretty good. I screwed up and had the camera settings wrong, so the pics are way too blurry. We'll have to fly it again soon and see if we can get some better pics.

Off-center damage to booster due to thrust vectoring of sustainer (note thrust vectored to the right in above photo).
We forgot to put a protective covering on the booster, but we'll be sure to remember it for the next launch.

If we can go, it'll be the first thing I throw in the truck.

Thanks folks.

I added a pic of the booster's burn damage to the end of the last photo post. Notice the thrust vectoring in the photo right above it. It matches the damage on the booster. I'd bet Bill's rocket collection that thrust vectoring plays a much bigger part in some of our rocket's tipping off at launch than most people think. This is the second time I've caught obvious and considerable vectoring with the camera.

Tim, those may be blurred shots, but they're incredible nonetheless. You can actually see the offset thrust in that separation shot (which is absolutely fabulous!). Too bad about the damage, looks mostly cosmetic and not structural. Intruder might want to build another booster "for show" and keep this one for flight, at least until it finally gives out.
