Originally it was due to a number of unattainable (at the time) parts: Plastic nose cone that otherwise was only used in a couple of rare Enerjet kits. (duplicated in wood a few years ago by Semroc, and in resin by Moldin' Oldies) Plastic corrugated wrappers. ST-20 tube (now duplicated by Semroc) The six conical nose cones for the pods (a close-enough version was still available from Estes) Other than that, I can't tell you. I know I would never pay more than $70 for one. I have paid from $20 - $35 dollars for a set of wraps, and I came across a half dozen nose cones a few years ago for $10 each.

I'm FINALLY going to get to finish my friend's Semroc Orion for him when I get home from OK tomorrow. Thanks for all of the photos guys, but there's one detail I need some help on: Does anyone have a close-up of the sides of the aux. tanks? What decals do they get and do they take silver bands at the top and bottom? Thanks!

I largely agree with Roy's prior response on the 'cost' factor of the Orion. And no, I would not pay anywhere near $400 for one in any condition personally. But, the Orion was probably one of Centuri's more 'classic' kits and as such is probably always gonna bring a premium over other kits. People just 'like' it alot. But, people pay what they want to pay for something, be it a rare coin, a low mileage garage queen vintage muscle car (like, in the $100K range and higher), or for a vintage rocket kit in mint condition. And in each of those examples, it's not like the person is not getting something in return for their money. Now, whether or not they can recoup their FULL investment (or get MORE for it later) is determined by a lot of things, but just because someone spent more for a 'rare' item (or desirable by their definition) than you or I might, does not mean they have simply just thrown their money away. They've just 'exchanged' one thing (money) for another (the collectable). Just think of the loads of cash people toss at (illegal) drugs each day for some brief 'experience'. Now THAT does seem like a waste to me, but then again people may differ on their personal interpretation of that. To each his own, as it has been said many times. Earl

Thanks for all the help, advice, and memories! The Orion finished up pretty well.

Jeff...Very nice Orion. Your friend will be pleased. Here's my version.... A 2x upscale Orion.
The build is over at TRF. Tubes are NCR and Semroc. Cones and decals were made by Sandman. |

That's a very nice upscale. Who did the wraps?

I did. All scratch built . The top wraps are weed eater string...the bottom are round toothpicks all super glued one at a time to poster board. Most are kinda straight.

The Semroc colours look pretty decent when finished. The external details when picked out in yellow really stand out. Horses for courses I suppose - the buyer wanted the Semroc art copied.

That's a nice Orion. I like the Semroc colors also, but my recipient wanted the Centuri scheme. I like Semroc's red cones and tails on the tanks since thay match the nose cone.

I flew my 2x upscale on Saturday at the annual Eat Cheese or Fly launch at Bong in Wisconsin. It went up on an Aerotech G-80-4 and was recovered with out a scratch. Photo by Sather Ranum.
