8/26/10 AeroTech Releases RMS™ Delay Drilling Tool AeroTech is releasing a new delay drilling tool for use with its line of 18-38mm RMS™ and RMS-Plus™ reloadable motors. The RMS Delay Drilling Tool™ (or RDDT™, P/N T082510-1) is designed for shortening RMS and RMS-Plus delay elements to adjust the time delay of an AeroTech RMS reloadable motor. This tool is a “stand-alone” unit and replaces the Delay Drilling Adapter™ (P/N T062705-1) which is being discontinued. The RDDT consists of a machined drill tool body and a 1/4” stub drill bit with an attached knob. The tool also has a provision for calibration, as the tip of the drill bit must be flush with the end of the tool body for accurate use. Though adjusted initially at the factory, a set screw placed within the knob makes any necessary readjustment easy. The ends of the tool are counterbored with recesses that are labeled with 4 or 8 second reductions in the delay time. To use, the RMS or RMS-Plus delay element is placed into the desired end of the tool and held firmly in place, the drill bit is inserted and the knob is rotated clockwise until the bit is fully seated in the delay and no resistance is felt. In addition, a supplied 1/16” thick washer may be placed between the drill tool body and the drill knob to shorten the delay to an intermediate value. As is always the case with drilled RMS delays, the delay element should be installed in the motor with the drilled end facing the propellant grains (or away from the ejection charge) for best delay accuracy. Also, no delay should be shortened to less than 4 seconds. AeroTech is planning to eventually sell most RMS reloads in only the longest certified delay, so the RMS Delay Drilling Tool will be essential for the future use of the RMS line of products. I don't get it. The description says it works on 18-38mm RMS. For the 18mm and 24mm reloads, you might only want to take off a second or two. But the tool is set to take off 4 seconds or 8 seconds. An included washer allows "an intermediate value", so maybe another couple seconds. Sounds like this tool is more geared to the 29mm and 38mm hardware sets and their delays.
I've drilled my own delays in the past, comparing lengths of different delay elements, and finding the necessary amount to drill out. A tool with an 8-32 screw would allow a user to dial a stop accurately to 1/32" for every full turn, providing a method to set up an accurate drilling gage. Unless I really missed something, looks like I'll make my own drilling tool.

Well, according to the press release, most RMS kits are going to be sold with the longest delay, so this tool would definenately be needed. Also by intermmediate, the washer reduced the adjustment by 2 seconds so 4>2 and 8 > 6, so you get max minus 2 ,4, 6, or 8 seconds.

I don't know if Hobbylinc has them yet, but they are going to carry them. Ken at Performance Hobbies just got some in, I just ordered one from him.
I'm wondering if you could use a 1/32" thick shim washer to drill in 1 second increments. |

I shouldn't have to hold several pieces together in one hand while holding the delay in the other. I anticipate lots of "Oh, $#@%s" from the folks who somehow get their neurons crossed and drop the thing. I know why AT did it this way, but it's far from ideal for the user who wants to trim something other than the "stock" delays. At that point, I advocate using a home-made peach pitter. It's one piece and infinitely adjustable. Doug .
