I am sad at his passing, but happy for him he was able to have a period of sharing happy memories with his friends, and accollades from the unwashed masses before he left us. He also got to see Vern and Gleda treated with respect by NAR and Estes all at the same time. I suspect he left us with joy in his heart, that all he worked for will not be lost any time soon, and will be enjoyed by many for decades to come.
His life had actual meaning to hundreds of thousands of people. Jerry |

Quote:
"On my eighteenth birthday, my father wrote in my personal copy of the fourth edition of the Handbook of Model Rocketry the following: Bill, you don't have to carry forward what I've started here, but you must do something meaningful with your life--I know you will...Love, Dad. And since that day, I've pursued my love of model rockets as a profession." Disinterested parties might be tempted to say that Mike Dorffler devoted his talents to designing "toys" and that he could have made more meaningful contributions to the world if he had applied his abilities in other areas. They couldn't be more wrong. Think of all of the aerospace engineers, astronauts, pilots, airframe & powerplant mechanics, scientists, mathematics and science teachers, and scientifically-literate and "numerate" (mathematically literate) lay people who were inspired to learn and accomplish what they have learned and achieved by building and flying the model rocket kits that Mr. Dorffler designed! (The same goes for all other living and deceased model rocket designers and model rocketry educational publication authors.) No matter how humble one's work may appear to be, no one should ever underestimate the enormous effects that it may have on other people over time, and Mr. Dorffler's work was (and is) no exception. May he find and enjoy--after reunion with departed loved ones--the idealized model rocket range about which G. Harry Stine wrote in his book: "Someday I'd like to fly on such an ideal rocket range."

I'm with Jerry on this one. Hopefully, his NARAM experience lightened his heart and made his last days easier. RIP

Very sad news. I hope he was able to tell how much he meant to the hobby at NARAM this year.
