Default Estes Model Rocket News Vol 10 No 3

I would like to get some information on this issue of Model Rocket News. I don't think I have ever seen it sold on Ebay, and I have been watching for quite some time for it. Who has a copy of this issue in their MRN collection?

Joe

I've saved the old issues that Estes mailed to me or sent in orders years ago, but I haven't collected them. What is on the cover of this issue and when was it published?

The cover featured a photo of Vern with an associate checking out a unit to test model rocket engines. The issue had a great rocket plan................a scale Japanese 'cruise missile' called the Kamikaze Baka.

Mark, issues of Estes Model Rocket News dating back to the mid-sixties are currently selling at $5-$10 per copy, and generally near the bottom of that range. They are as collectible as they ever were, they are historically significant, and they still make a very interesting read. In my opinion, there has never been a better time than right now to begin assembling a collection.

I remember getting them in the mail as a kid. Estes would send them free in a year that you had placed an order. To me, they were a huge part of the hobby, and they really kept my interest up. I read them cover to cover and it was always a great surprise when the new issue dropped through the mail slot.

Yes, I received several issues back when I was a kid, too, but they are long gone. I just wish that I had found a way to keep them. I had the issues that were published in 1967, 1968 and 1969.

I'll keep that in mind.

Sigh....................I knew I shouldn't have posted a photo of the plan in this thread. Guys, can we please get back to the original intent.................you know, the poll?

Well, as long as I'm here anyway, a couple of points about the Kamikaze Baka..................

One 'chute brings back the power pod in the normal way, the other 'chute is attached to the rear of the BT-60 and packed in the space between the power pod and the main airframe (when the power pod ejects this 'chute is deployed and the rocket is retrieved nose down).

Did anyone notice that the rear of the power pod is 2 1/2" ahead of the rear edge of the BT-60? I would worry that the exhaust gases would scorch the rear end of the airframe.

Now (hopefully), back to the poll..............

Joe

I've created a new thread in the Plans section regarding this design. Please go over there to continue the discussion of the Japanese Baka plans.
