Hello All,

Below are several links to scale data (including model plans) on the World War II German Rheinbote, a four-stage solid propellant missile. It had a range of 137 miles (although with a very small--just 88 pounds--warhead). Its diglycol propellant solid motors demonstrated that solid propellant rockets could compete with liquid propellant ones for long-range applications. It also set a speed record of Mach 5, which would not be exceeded for several years. Had World War II gone the other way, I think the Rheinbote would have been used as a military surplus sounding rocket, as we used military surplus Deacon and Nike motors for sounding rockets. I'm always interested in this kind of info. This rocket would be a neat model for a build... and I've seen it elsewhere before, but I'd love to see a build of that other rocket behind the subject rocket in that museum photo - I'd like to see that fly, too! Very cool!

Very cool!I believe that's a Rheintocher, a radar beam-riding SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile). It might even make a workable R/C model (with low-thrust, long-burning motors); one channel could mechanically deploy a parachute for landing.
