Some or most of you regulars here may already know this. For those that don't, here's a tip for reading messages at YORF.

To see/read all the new posts since your last visit, click on the New Posts link up on the top toolbar. There you will be presented with a list of the new posts and replies to old posts since your last visit. From there you can do one of two things. Click on the subject line which will take you to the original post. There you will find a link thats says "View First Unread" in the top left of the message. Clicking that will take you to the first unread reply.

The alternative is when at the New Posts window you'll note a little down arrow to the left of the subject line. Clicking on that will take you directly to the first unread reply in that thread.

Greetings,
I'm kinda new here.
What you have said here works great. Thank-you.
But I have a question:
What if I only get thru some of what is on the list of new posts and I don't have time to finish going thru the whole list. So I leave, or the system kicks me out, and I come back, YORF thinks I went thru them all and I don't know of a way to get the original list of new posts back. Can you help me with this? I tried searches, but I'm coming up empty handed, or maybe I'm doing something stupid. Thanks.

Well, if you clicked on the post and went past the pages it assumes you read it.

Just because the page came up doesn't automatically mean you read it!

So, no more shortcut!

Read those posts! All of them...there will be a test at the next launch!

OK,... makes sense,...
but what about the other posts from the list I have not clicked on yet? Is there a way of getting the list back?

Unfortunately, not that I know of. I've gotten caught by this myself a few times.

Thanks.
At least I know I'm not doing something wrong.
This usually is not a problem with YORF as there usually is only a handful of new posts a day. I also have this same trouble with the TRF too, but they have somewhere over 75 posts a day, so it's a bigger headache for me there.

The key to remember with tools such as this forum is that it keeps track of "new posts since your last visit". It does NOT keep track of what your have or have not read.

So if you log in and there are 10 new posts and, without reading anything, log out and then log back in, you will see zero new posts (the number of posts since you logged out seconds ago).

Many times when I see folks wondering what is going on I have discovered that they are often assuming that the forum is keeping track of unread posts, but it isn't.

hope this helps too.

What I often do if I have to leave before I've looked at all the new posts is to do the following:

Assuming you have a window with a list of all the new posts:
- Go to the log out button and WITH YOUR RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON click on it and select "Open in new window"
- This will log you out in the new window but keep your list of new posts intact.
- You can then come back at your leasure (assuming you don't shut your computer doww) and read them (even while logged out).

Any specific acronyms? YORF, obviously, means "Ye Olde Rocket Forum", while TRF means "The Rocketry Forum"...

Wait a minute....wouldn't it be easier for you to make a list of what you've seen and let us fill in the blanks for you? ;)

ROTFLMAO!

Any in particular? IMHO, I think they are all self explanatory. ITMT, we'll wait your reply. FWIW, some are just made up. OTOH, some aren't.

It lets you know if they're online or not.

I should add that if the user has invisible mode turned on that the dot stays grey for other users "hiding" the fact that the person is online. The moderators can see you though due to the dot being red on our end.

Carl,

Are you serious?

If that's true, it's gotta be one of the biggest bureaucratic moves in history. While it might have been a mistake to start with, recalling them only makes it worse, IMO. (I'd be curious to know what other three-letter combos aren't allowed - I can think of lots of ~vulgar ones :D )

Anyway, can you imagine driving down the road and getting pulled over because you've failed to return your recalled plates? "Sir, I stopped you 'cause your license plate says 'WTF' on it." I'm sure my reply would be, "WTF?" :D

WTF-???? (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,371902,00.html)

I saw a list once with the disallowed sequences. I would hate to be the license plate "censor" for the vanity tags.

Those plates would be hugely popular here in New York...

Especially with the p**ing Calvin (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/28582) crowd. :chuckle:
