Okay, given that my first attempt at a backslider made a very pretty impressive lawn dart (I think that vent hole made for a nice whistle.) I suspect I'm overlooking something basic.
Should the motor eject or stay put?

The motor has to stay in place.

I wondered if the CG would be in the wrong place without it.

Here's a good start on the Backslider, including plans:
http://www.lunar.org/docs/LUNARclips/v10/v10n6/backslider.shtml
I built one with a 34" length of BT-20 and a 13mm mount for an A RG contest event. The first flight qualified; the second van-darted (destroying the balsa nose cone.)
The only things I can gather is that a 13mm casing plus mount weighed less than an 18mm casing and I got lucky the first time. Or it may be because I did not think of shaking any debris out before flying it again.
