Need some help here.
Some years ago I built a "finless" bird that I believe was called the "Vulcan." It had a hardwood nosecone and a cardstock shroud making up for the fins. I was a kit, but I cannot remember by whom. Any info would be appreciated. This bird flew well and made a neat sound on the way up. I flew it it on all size 18mm, A8-C6's. Want to build another.

Thanks 8-)

Centuri made it.

Warm up your printer, get some cardstock and make a clone.

Thanks, but that's the Vulcan that comes up in the search, but the one I'm looking for had a "reverse" tailcone for the stabilizer, and a longer shaped nosecone, hardwood.

For the life of me I can't remember the company's name.

Centuri had a design contest winner called "Finless" that was made like that, but the nosecone was balsa. Assuming my memory is working correctly...

He posted a TIFF, you probably need a TIFF reader installed to view it.

Here's a PNG you should be able to view.

... okay, why can't I upload a 132 kb PNG if you can upload a similarly sized TIFF?

gah.

Here's a link from my website. Dang dain bramaged forum software...

Yep, that's close to it. Thank You. I'll build this one, but without the conocal nosecone, as the it didn't have that type. I'll keep looking, somewhere out there is a pic or plans of that kit.

Thank You All. Most kind of you to helpp out. 8-)

What about the Rouge Aerospace - Deep Surface Probe?

That looks similar.

It had that type nose cone, but looked like the one posted as "finless". I keep thinking it was an old SAI kit, but it is not listed in the one catalog posted on line. It was a kit, that I do remember.

Thanks for looking. That is a nice bird. Another build!

It seemed to me that was from JimZ, but it took me a while to track it down:

There's more interesting "stuff" at JimZ here:

Space age industries made a kit called the vulcan, rather short lived. One of the old model rocketry magazines had a picture of it in the trade show review, but I can't remember which issue.

Sorry Scott I should have been more specific. The link to model rocketry magazine is under the catagory of "Other companies" its down below the estes and centuri catalogs. There is also a similar rocket to the SAI Vulcan called the Candlestick in a issue about two to Three months earlier. Volume 1&2 have an index, 3&4 do not.

Interesting.
"Also new from Centuri is the Warp 1, a two-stage model using the Centuri "passport" staging system. This sport model, designed by Larry Brown of the R & D department, will be ready for sale in early spring."
Discuss? Never heard of this one. Anyone?

You're welcome. I've got a soft spot for SAI kits. Bryant Thompson was our section advisor "back in the Day". I actually got to see and hold his record setting tempest Fugit! Mine didn't do so well, I painted it silver nad got a lost track.

Now to make things interesting, if you go to page 18 of the november 1970 issue, and chage the plans to 20mm tube for both sections, You get the vulcan, it was based on the candlestick, not the arcturus as quoted in the text.

i'm not sure from the picture but I think that ended up being the Marauder. It is certain the futuristic rocket never materialised.

Ahhh, the Tempest Fugit. What a wickedly fast and high flyer when built right. I had several of those, and learned real quick ,that a C6 would put it out of sight. That would still make a good PD duration model. Can you imagine that bird on an old D3? I have some left.....hmmm.

I don't think I'd risk an original! I built a clone out of quest parts, using a plastic nose and coupler. I put in the short payload section for the old NAR payload just for sentimental reasons. This time I painted it red like the original model, as I recall it was originally made from series 8 tube, but it could have been BT 40 even. My clone flies almost out of sight on a B-motor.I'll have to ask Bryant about kitting up a clone of it, I only see him once a year or so.

In the meantime I'm going to build a vulcan

Oh, haha, I don't have any more Tempest Fugits. I build, not collect (unfortunately). If your buddy Bryant kits up, let me know, I'd buy a few. Those SAI kits were nice.
Speaking of BT40 tube, I don't know if they were that big in dia.. maybe old style BT30? I do recall the nose cones were really nice, like the FSI hardwoods, and the balsa was top notch.

The Vulcan was a good flyer on any motor I put in it at the time. Got good air and rarely coned or tail wagged.

SEMROC should look into this model, as well as the FSI Viking series. Team up with Sandman for some hardwood nose cones and ,Viola!, some hot kits. I know wishful thinking, but I have to find the plans an clone an SAI Vulcan.
