View Full Version : New rocket with Flis Kit canted mount

I picked up one of the canted "Deuce" engine mounts from Flis Kits at Narcon, but when I got home I had a hard time deciding what to build it into. It fits a BT-60 tube, but I didn't want to just throw it into a Big Bertha, so I waited for inspiration. Well it struck earlier in the week in upscale form. Anyone want to take a guess at what I upscaled?

HA! I've obviously stumped the band with this one. See if this brings it in any more clearly.

Wild-hair guess, but that circular section "suggests" the USS Atlantis. :D

A well guided suggestion indeed. I figured that was a dead giveaway.
I wasn't sure how it was going to look with the canted mounts, but so far it looks pretty cool. I've got the BT-55 ram tubes here with me at work and I'm hoping to find time to cut them down and sand them so I can put them on tomorrow night. After that it's on to the detail pieces. I haven't really given them much thought yet.
The Flis Kit mount is a really nice piece of work. Very sharp. I was amazed at how easily it slipped into the BT-60 after I finished putting it together.

The fact that there have been banner ads about the "Refit USS Atlantis" popping up here on YORF didn't hurt... :D

But it was also the only design I could think of that had that "landing deck". The fins in the earlier picture reminded me of the nacelle columns, too...

Do you think those canted motors will have any effect on performance? Good, bad, or indifferent?

"Cool" would be enough for me. It's a BT-60 based rocket, so it's fairly large anyway. The two motors should be enough to get it off the pad. And the smoke trail should look REALLY sharp.
Have you seen any shots of the Flis Kits "Deuces Wild" in action? That's where the mount is originally from.

No, haven't seen flight shots of that kit, though I've probably looked at the images at least once when I visited Jim's web site...

I do remember once seeing some shots of a Titan III with canted motors and, as I recall, no fins. I also remember seeing a picture of a modroc that had two body tubes with a common motor mount and the two bodies canted outward toward the top (like a two-headed snake, which is how the decals were applied). The Titan III flew OK, but the two-headed snake... well...

It just looked like there was a LOT of angle in that mount, relative to the length of the body, and it's a little strange to see them like that...

I'll see if I can find a good Deuce shot that I can link you to.

See if this brings it in any more clearly.(mock hysteria) OMG! It's a Diet Mountain Dew! :p

Seriously, Bill, it looks pretty good. Say, whenever I think of the Atlantis, I consider getting some hemispherical custom nose cones for the "warp nacelles," to make it seem slightly more... Enterprising. :D

Anybody else think something remotely similar?

Didn't it appear that way in some catalog photos?

Didn't it appear that way in some catalog photos? It seems to me that it did.

I was kind of disappointed  to take a closer look at it on JimZ, and discover that they were (apparently) just fiber board circles, IIRC.

This is what I meant. They don't look like flat discs in this picture.

(heavy sigh) But then again, the Centuri Quasar looked like it had a curved boattail in the catalog...

I gotta git in here more often :)

Sounds like a great use of the Deuce mount. I think you will be *very* pleased with the results.

Here's another picture of a Deuce launch (http://fliskits.com/photo_album/2nd_anniversary/images/p1010095.jpg)

but NOTHING beats the 38mm Deuce that Carl Tulanko built... (http://fliskits.com/photo_album/naram-45/images02/38s_05.jpg)

:D

You should also be aware that FlisKits is hosting a "Deuce Bash" contest where the only firm rule is that the Deuce engine mount be used in the design. This design certainly qualifies!

You can get more information by following this link (http://fliskits.com/services/deuce_bash/index.htm)

First prize is a $50 FlisKits Bucks gift certificate, a Deuce's Wild! kit and two motor mounts.

The contest ends on 31-May, but you still ahve time :)

Good luck on the upscale and be sure to keep everyone posted!

I'd feel a little funny entering an existing design in a contest. Are you sure this would work? It's a straight upscale of the USS Atlantis.

Oooohhhhh.... !

Yea, that wouldn't really work... looking more for original works.

That's what I figured. I may be an original, but my building talents are strictly public domain.
It should still be a cool bird.

At this point I think it's flyable. Guess I'll know this weekend.

There was a picture of some mean looking guy growling at me! :D

Surely that sweet little girl can't be related?!

Cool looking rocket you're putting together there, Bill.

That's an old jersey I've been looking for for several weeks. It fit pretty well about 60 pounds and 20+ years ago. Some of my old teammates have been sending out pics of themselves in their shirts, so I had Sarah take a picture so I could return the favor. I think 1989 was the last time I actually wore a large. Lately I've crept closer to 2X. The bandana was a 21st birthday present from two of those guys. It was wrapped around a bottle of Southern Comfort and saw a lot of work as a sweatband over the years. It isn't a political statement. :D

Okay, so I guess it WAS flyable after all. I managed two flights with the Altantis today, and both were impressive. VOA was windy as hell, which made for some interesting windcocking and recovery mileage, but I managed some cool pics and even a movie. (The movie is great, but I held the camera sideways. Launch shot conditioned, I guess. :o ) I even managedto get my launch shot with the two exhaust trails clearly visible.

Ok, now that *first* picture looks "other worldly", I just gotta say :)

It reminds me of that episode of Star Trek (original series) where the Enterprise is thrown back in time and finds itself in Earth's atmosphere and they are trying to gain altitude as a group of fighter jets are gaining on it.

very cool!

Hey Bill,

What's the status on this one? Is it decorated (paint/decals) yet?

Sorry, Ev. I missed this last YEAR. :o It's now painted, but not decaled. I was writing the review up on it tonight and went back looking for anything that might add to the build notes. I tried to upscale a set of decals, but they didn't turn out too well. (It also didn't help that we went through move hell right around this time. ;) ) I think I'm going to get back out on Sunday, so I'll definitely take this one along for the ride.

Nope, still waiting to attach the detail pieces. (Dowels, cardstock, etc.) I've got the paint picked out. :o
