Looks like much of this information came out of the old SIG catalog. They used to have a wealth of information about balsa, most of which has been removed over the years. Here's an archive of the old stuff that used to be in the SIG catalog years ago.

Pound for pound, balsa wood is as strong as steel. I've got a 1" cube of balsa that I use when I'm giving talks on the subject. That 1" cube is strong enough to hold Peter's bigger brother Bob Alway. It weighs about 2-3 grams.

Yeah, but that's just a trick, Bob. Anyone who has ever met Bob Alway knows how buoyant his spirit is. You get him teaching a kid about rockets and he just about floats off the ground. :D
