Has anyone cloned any of the original Estes Goonys using an 18mm engine mount in place of the 13mm mount? Was it necessary to add weight to the nose to compensate for the added weight of the larger engine?

I built an original "Sky Shriek" and a "Zoom Broom" back in the early to mid 80's and powered them both with 18mm A's and B's for several flights with no added nose weight.
They flew fine. :D
As long as your clone uses the same components (weight wise) I'm sure they would fly similar to my original kits....just don't go using any epoxy attached though-the-wall-attached basswood or aircraft ply for fins. :p
Note that I did not ever fly them on a "C" engine, which weighs considerably more than an A or B. I suspect you would be okay with a C, but I can only positively speak for the A&B.

Excellent. I only planned to fly them on A and B motors anyway. They seem like small field rockets to me.
Thanks for the response.

Yeah Bill don't use epoxy, you know your epoxy incapable.

Me and epoxy. You and English.

Picture #3 looks M capable.

The way the grain on those bottom fins look your going to wind up with a shread or a broken fin on landing when you try to fly it. :p
What do you know about English your a history major. Its Epoxy and I.

I gotta agree here with Patriot Pilot on the shred possibility of the lower fins.
I don't think one could have picked a worse grain alignment to the flight direction.
Unless this one is planned for a single, "fire-&-forget" flight, I'd suggest detaching these lower fins and cutting a set with proper grain direction.
I think those would shred on even a B6-4 flight.

I'll chance it. That was the way it was shown on the sheet, so I never gave it a thought. We'll know on Sunday, one way or another. ;)

Yeah chance it. The ejection charge will probably blow it to bits anyway ;) .

My thoughts exactly.

Positive thoughts, Bill... Think positive! :)

Hey Bill,

Aren't you the one that seems to get at least 50% of all the Estes motors with the "Blastin' Kap" ejection charges ?

Yup. That's why I'm positive it doesn't matter how the grain is oriented. :D Good chance that I'll never see the bulk of the rocket again anyway.

I bought an upscale cone of the ZOOMBROOM by Rocketpad(called a "MEGA ZOOM BROOM"). It flys with 24mm motors. Launched it with a C11-3 and a D12-5-cool flights!
I had an original one back in the 70's but have no idea what ever became of it. When I got all mY old kits from my mom's house in the early 90's, I did not come accross it.
But the big one is fun!
