View Full Version : New Quest Offerings - Maybe?

I saw the news regarding the new Quest Future Launch Vehicle here on YORF. I also noticed on the Quest site that they are introducing another new kit, the MLAS SPORT SCALE Model Rocket in November seen here: http://www.questaerospace.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=3014&eq=&Tp=

Then I was doing some web browsing and found these two offerings (the Quest Big Dog and Xcalibur) referenced on A2Z Hobbies here: http://www.a2zhobbies.com/Quest/Skill_4/

Both of these rockets are big skill level 4 kits, both listing the engines as D18-4 and D18-7. As far as I know neither engine is currently being produced.

I've been hoping for a while that Quest would start producing some bigger and more powerful rockets. However since neither of these two offerings are referenced on the Quest site and the engines don't exist yet, I'm wondering if these are for real.

Pretty cool, eh? So Bill and Shrox ... how do I reserve MLAS kits SN 001 through 010? :)

Old stuff from the era when they were planning an 18mm composite D18 motor and kits to go with the motors.

Dibs on 11-20. :)

But how do I get mine signed by members of the team, Tim? ;)

If that's the case it's too bad. I'd like to see Quest come out with a few bigger rockets and both of those looked pretty good to me.

I did post a question through the 'contact us' feature on the A2Z website asking if the kits were for real but I haven't heard back.

Several months ago, in a thread on YORF about the Quest E & F motors, Bill Stine stated that the Big Dog kit would be modified with a 29mm motor tube to use the E & F motors. He also stated that the boxes for the Big Dog kit had been damaged in shipping.

I asked Bill about the Xcalibur kit but he never answered. :(

Thanks for the info Bob. It looks like there just may be life in one or both of these models yet.

What ever happened to the promised ThunderJets E and F blackpowder motors. They
were discussed at NARAM 50 ? They were to be released in spring of 2009. There was also supposed to be line of new rockets for them.

Bill explained that in other threads.

I figured that might be the case. But I have searched and I am not finding such a post from Bill
or anyone else about their release ? Could you direct me to such a post by him.

Thanks
John ..

So according to Bill the following issues need to be resolved before the motors can be manufacturered and then shipped.

-need DOT EX numbers
-need NAR certs
-produce motors
-secure clearance out of China
-secure clearance through US customs and Coast Guard

With all of the rules an restrictions that Quest is dealing with, coupled with the security conscious world we now live in, it was probably easier to build the Hoover Dam than it will be to get these motors produced and into production. There seems to be a lot of red tape to navigate. I hope it works out in the end.

Nah! It would still be easier to get the rocket motors in. You cannot even consider building a dam of any size, let alone a mega dam like Hoover these days. Someone would find an obscure fish species that they speculate would be wiped out by the dam and stop it in its tracks.

I'm liking the sport scale stuff, that's great!, but where is the actual scale rockets that I'm missing. I'd love to see some more of those. We're beginning to focus on actual scale over here instead of sport scale. Just kinda wondering......

LOL! You know you are absolutely right. If the Hoover Dam project was on the drawing board today we'd surely be told "sorry folks we can't build the mega dam because it would affect the late fall mating habits of the dove tailed horn toad", or something to like that.

That was on the news almost every night for several years here in TN.

We also lost a nice rocket field, Spears Range, to the spotted owl in the 90's. I think that it was released for use again, but I'd have to ask the MC2 guys if it's the same field.

The plot thickens. As I said earlier in this thread I did email A2Z Hobby asking if the Quest Rocket Kit Xcalibur, Item # QUE-5011, listed as Coming Soon for a price of $31.90 was for real or a leftover from days gone by. Well I got an email back from A2Z Hobby yesterday with an answer to my question and it is:

Frank,

We do have access to that item so if you want to order it let me know..........

The information on the A2Z webpage for the Xcalibur and Big Dog kits has the original motor type listing (D18). Bill Stine has stated that these kits will have their motor mounts changed to 29mm to use the Quest E12 & F12 motors (Hopefully, the kit will have an adapter for smaller motors ;) ).

Man you are good at keeping secrets and misdirection. You should be working for the government. :D ;)

But that would be bad because then you wouldn't be working on creating rocket designs so forget I said that. :D

Judging by the info you posted up here on YORF and on TRF today it looks like the Big Dog IS a reality as you indicated earlier. It looks llike Quest is releasing a whole new line of Mid Power rockets. If it comes to pass this is excellent news. :)
