Well, a few weeks ago I got the bug up my butt to build a new RC BG. My favorite one to date has been my 4” upscale Mach-10. While the model does not stay aloft more than a minute, it is still very fun to fly and attracts a lot of attention at every launch I take it to. The drawback is that the long turnaround time from launch to launch is due primarily to the fact that it flies best on F12 24mm reloads. I could fly, recover and launch the thing three times in the time it takes me to get the motor assembled correctly! So, I got some smaller radio gear, and decided to make a smaller Mach 10 that would fly on D and E single use BP motors. The model is based on a BT-80, uses Spektrum 2.4 ghz radio components and Hobbico servos (links attached). I hope to fly it before the weather gets too crappy.

Very cool Scott!

Any chance this will end up being a kit. Maybe it could include instructions to either build as a regular rocket or convert to an RC rocket.

On a kit related note, have you been able to straighten out the decal paper quality problem that's been affecting kit production?

One word: WOW!

I never thought about treating it as a flying wing (elevons).

That's something that just might get me going in R/C again.

Please do a plan pack on it. I still have an old Berg rx that's close in size to your Spektrum that I bought for but never swapped into my Zagi. All I need are a couple of micro servos and one of those new fangled lipo batteries.

Very nice... best of luck on the first flight.

@ Cas, Thanks! No, this won't be a kit... Too much involved in the instructions. No the decal paper situation still sucks. After buying 6 different papers from different suppliers and finding that the problem comes from the paper manufacturer who made ALL of the paper, I quit. If you want me to send you examples of good old and bad new paper let me know. Everyone I've had try it can see a difference, but the company that makes the stuff can't. It works fine if you put a dab of Future under each decal before applying it, but I can't ask consumers to do that.

@ Greg, thanks, I hope you will still be able to say that after the first flight  .

@ TB, The 4" one I have flys GREAT. Its really not a hard build. As you see I just stuck the small servos on top of the wing and try to keep the center of gravity the same as in the non-RC version (about at the front of where the rudder meets the body tube). Fly it with a heavy nose cone and it will boost almost perfectly straight on is own with moderately low thrust engines. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about it, but plans are highly unlikely due to lazy-ass syndrome.

@ Flyback, Thanks... I'm sure I will be shaking. I'm planning on making an extended nose pod for the first flights and see how it behaves. I'm going to try Quest D8s first then MAYBE E9s for later flights. If I get used to its flight characteristics I want to essentially eliminate all nose weight and fly it on Quest D5s.

I thought the D8's were vaporware, same as the E and F's ?

Would love to have some of all the above :)

I can't speak to the current status of the Quest D8 motors but I did fly two of them at NARAM-52 (Thanks again, Bill!). :D

Scott, you can bet this one will attract attention as well. Loved seeing the Mach 10 fly.

Al, I still have a few of the "prototype" ones left.

Rocketflyer, I hope the first flight doesn't attract the WRONG attention... Like people running and ducking for cover (myself included)

That's why I stand behind you when you fly.
