Old Motors' Photos
 

I am going to post pictures of some of the older motors in my collection. I started in 1967 and have been a NAR member from 1968. Served on S&T and other NAR committees, but my military moves meant that I usually could not chair a committee long. Was on the Board of Trustees for nine years.
My motors are stored in a way that only the ones used for flying are readily accessible. When pulled out they all looked like this. The red ammo can was the first.

I do not claim that I have all of the motor histories or are totally accurate in my recollection. I welcome any clarifications or additional information.

Model Missiles Inc was set up by G Harry Stine. Brown Fireworks made there first motors based on Orville Carlilse's half-inch motors, but in the now standard 0690 x 2.75 inch size. One live motor and one flown in a Camroc at NARAM 15.

Estes B.8-6 from '68, B .8-5 from'67, and a C.8-0 booster from '67. NAR newsletter said that the C was certified in 1963. Old pound- second designation.

Second photo is two Estes B16 motors at the bottom - the nozzle is on a B16-5. No date codes. Designation was based on an incorrect reading of the test equipment they had at the time. Above them are a Centuri B3-5 and the nozzle of an Estes B3-5 from 1967.

According to Stine the Uni-Jet motors were produced in 1964-65. They were 0.5 x 2.25 inches. They had a propellant that did not age well and they became unreliable. They were equivalent of 1/2A motors. The ones I have are a D2, D3, and D4. I believe the number is the delay. The nozzle is one the D4.

The pride of my collection is a Prodyne. NAR newsletter said that they were certified in 1963. This is a Prodye Hurricane BE-3.5-2-8. NAR equivalent D2-8. Their larger motors were Cyclones in E and F impulses. Again, the old pound-second designations

Final for tonight is for flying your Estes Omega with Cineroc. D12-0/D12-7. Date peeled off of booster and the dash 7 was made in 1971. More later

I will Steve. Not sure how these photos show up on a good computer.

Obviously the two stage combo is a D13-0/D13-7. D13's always worked for me, but I did see several that did not.

Over on TRF is a thread on old motors that deals more with F and up. I do not have any of the motors like the Syner-Jets or Plasma Jets or Ravanna. I did provide a couple of catalogs to www.ninfinger.org that were from a couple of manufacturers.

Will post more pics tomorrow. I apologize if the quality or orientation of some of them are not real great. Photos taken in my small work area. Ammo cans now stored again.

Especially the B16-5/B3-0
I know at one point Carl at Semroc was going to re-create many of the old core burners, but he never was able to get back into producing motors before he unfortunately passed.
He truly was a one-of-a-kind gem to our hobby we likely will never see again.
