As noted elsewhere, the Ute-Tomahawk flew great. Last weekend, I launched it a couple of times for Space Week. Although they all get a cursory inspection, it's hard to tell a tiny kid "no ,you can't launch it" so with some super glue and some fingers crossed, they are sent back to their parents with a motor and some wadding for prep. Shreaded fins, melted chutes, at least two glued nose cones, even a motor mount shooting up the tube at ignition, the carnage was awesome! I doubt half of them could be re-flown by the end of the day. But the kids loved it.

Anyway, during the lulls, some of the grown-ups flew various low-powered rockets. U-T flew twice and both times booster and sustainer landed within 25 feet of the pad. The pop sound at staging got an "OOhh" from the smalls. I had so much fun, I decided to continue the project with dedicated sustainers and perhaps a Paiute booster.

And that's what's in the picture: fixins for three(!) Tomahawks each with the different fin designs from the scale literature. Tubes and Balsa from Semroc, Kevlar from Apogee, Basswood from Michaels. The .pdf is has the fin outlines in case anyone wants to make their own; just print it as is. Two of the Tomahawks will be mini engine powered, but the big fin sustainer with the 12" payload section gets a standard 18mm mount. The Paiute will probably be 18mm powered as well. It will all be sport scale.

I’m glad you had good flights, Mark. And I love the idea of multiple Tomahawks hanging around. I have two, myself.

I lost my original Tomahawk to a G33 CATO, and have just recently finished rebuilding it. 1/5 scale-ish, so Pro Series / mid power.

I did a 3D printed fincan with carbon fiber reinforcements this time.

Here's an intermediate construction picture. The nose cones have been dunked in sealer and are drying. All three Tomahawks have their fins on, each in a different style. I made cardstock fin mounts for the one on the Ute. I'm going to do more research on what other kinds of fin mounts were used. For the 12" payload version, it appears to be some kind of half-cone that mounts under the shell of the fin can itself. Also in the pictures is a set of fins for a possible Paiute booster.

My sister did get the Thiokol logo to cut on her Cricut but it's really small and fragile at this scale.

Is THIS what you are talking about ?

As you already know, the fins used on the 12" diameter payload are different than the 9" diameter one. With the exception of the two photo's, my data depicts the standard fins, as used on the 9" payload version.

The fin mounting method looks to be identical . . . HOWEVER, it appears that two different style of Fin Pivots were used ( look closely at pics of NT-12 ).

I modeled the 12” version as a square fixture with two bolts. That was my best guess after a long time looking at the photos in the JMRC newsletter.

I’ve seen another sounding rocket with the same attachment- I just can’t recall which right now.

That's it. Your drawings are really neat. In this scale, it's cutting the end off of a golf tee, a little sanding, spliting it and gluing it to either side of the fin. I'll have a go at it this afternoon.

The Tomahawk-12 I built to replace the one that drifted away (on an Estes Nike Smoke) sitting next to the Tomahawk-9 (on a Ute) I built to replace the one that I lost to a G33 CATO.

It’s been a Tomahawk heavy year.

On the subject of Nike Boosters, be SURE to note that there are different STYLES and SIZES of FINS that can be used ! ! !

Best I can do on the TERRIER booster . . . NOTE the DIFFERENT fins on the Booster.
