Scientific scale for weighing parts

2 Attachment(s)
To quote Magnus Pyke (see below), "SCIENCE!"

I'm looking for an accurate (but affordable) scientific scale to weigh rocket parts, etc., in both grams and ounces (for accurate entries into Rocksim, etc.).

I came across the following listing from a Big Box Store website, and I'm wondering if it will do.

For those of you who are experienced at this sort of thing, please respond accordingly. Thanks in advance!

My experience with scales in that price range is that the rare isn’t very trustworthy and I wouldn’t believe the last digit. I’d also tap it and let it settle a couple of times and recheck the weight.

There are some in the $50 price range at homebrew stores that are .1g up to about a kilo. You can put a whole good sized rocket on it. Tate/repeat weight is still an issue.

If you could afford it, an Ohaus Scout is pretty nice.

Harbor Freight has them, but not sure they are open. If so, use one of their 20% off coupons to save a couple dollars. I’d avoid a tiny one if the rocket cannot stand on it. Mine has a round weighing platform about 6” in diameter.

I just use postal scales. It gets me close enough and does both English and metric.

This is what I use-

Jay,

I have one of that particular model and it works just fine. I carry one that size in my range box that I take to FAI events. The amount that it might be off won't be significant for anything you do.

I also have a bigger one that I use as my desktop building room scale.

It comes from China so it would take it a while to get here now but I've ordered from them a couple of times. Great scale and large enough platen to stand a finned rocket on it. Again, I can't imagine you need more accuracy than what I need for FAI models.

Hope this helps.

Lee,

Is yours about this size?

I go analog vs digital for my scale. I have an old classic, an Ohaus Triple Beam.

I recommend this one from AWS.

https://www.amazon.com/American-Wei.../dp/B002SVQHWY/

It has two accessories most comparable scales don't include: calibration weights and an AC adapter. I like that it can run on batteries to take out in the field or on a power cord for use at home.

Thanks!

Yeah, I read the instructions for one scale: "To calibrate the scale, put an object weighing 2500g (5.5 oz) on the scale. Remove it, and put another object weighing the same amount. Your scale is now calibrated."

WTH? I have to come up with two identical objects? What good are *you,* scale manufacturer?

(shrug, heavy sigh of resignation)
