Upscaled Tazz
 

New poster but I thought someone here might get a kick out of this.

Wife's favorite rocket is Tazz (currently at 40 launches). I recently brought home a High Flier XL and as soon as she saw the tube and nose cone in the package she said "ooo, a giant Tazz!".
So I pretty much had no choice on this build. Interestingly enough when I started looking at the components I noticed the HF fins have the same overall shape as Tazz, so I guess it was meant to be

This isn't a "proper" scale, I was just fiddling with what I had as an experiment.
Main fins needed a slight trim on one side and a triangle added to match the Tazz shape.
Secondary fins/ailerons I made from 3" bulk balsa, uprights from scraps.
Rubber band mounts from "white" D motor ignitor plugs dremel'd into hooks and glued into 1/8" holes.
Wife gets the credit for the motor mount locking/ aileron alignment.
They're 2 lock nuts from sink drains. I believe the rocket mount is a 1 1/2", dremel'd down for weight and notched to interlock with the motor mount and the motor mount is 1 3/8" with threads cut out to slip over motor mount tube. They were found in a bucket of parts in the garage and there were variances between manufacturers so anybody that wants to build similar may need to store hop.
Anything else should be swlf-explanitory.

He weighed in at a chunky 156g.
The scaling is off and the drag surface area is much smaller per weight compared to Tazz so I was very worried at launch.
But.
Flew straight and "landed" perfectly!.
2 launches with C11-3's (I only had one pack).
Motor ejected at apogee in level flight.
Spiraled down and lawn darted softly with about 1" of nose buried.
No damage.

Sorry for being long winded but I just wanted to get everything out there for archival purposes since nobody may ever see this bad boy outside of my property.

That is really cool, great name!

Some may not know this but the Tazz is just a long-tube Gyroc.

Did you actually order a real PNK-80K nose from Estes? They used to sell that separately way back in the 90s and such but stopped.....only the SBB nose in that size now.

Be neat to see this nose back in 'real life' again....

It doesn't show up under "Nose Cones", or "All parts", but type in NC-80K in the search bar of their website, and it'll show up.

I was getting frustrated because I couldn't find an 80 ogive nose cone in the right ratio to look correct and eventually through a random search I got a link to some friggin hidden estes page.

Picked up some 1/8" sheets of balsa and Basswood today.
6"x24" balsa is weighing in at 52g, the Basswood at 130g so I've got to scale up the fins and get some rough estimates on weight and figure out what's feasible so I can get this thing in the air on something under an F.
Currently planning on main fins with Basswood and the ailerons and uprights with balsa but we'll see.
Also playing with a "floating" nose cone concept with a spring or foam to act as a shock absorber so this thing doesn't crumple on impact.
I guess I'll start a new thread and actually document this build as I go.
I also "think" I figured out an easy 2 1/2" lock ring setup but need to hit up home depot.

I think it would be neat if someone thought this was cool enough to do their own build.
The plumbing parts were easy for a proof-of-concept but might be a little much for a retrofit kit build for inexperienced builders.
I had an epiphany and have a new design that can be cut out of remnant balsa instead so all that's needed is a stop at Hobby Lobby for a High Flier XL kit, a 3"x36" plank of balsa and a couple rubber bands.
New design will also upscale for the bt-80 project to reduce weight and eliminate scrounging parts from home depot.

Mr. Twisty had a bad day.
C11-5 ejection charge failure.
Luckily it just rained so the ground was soft. Nose cone buried 5 1/4" but no damage to the body tube.
One fin popped off due to the shock but minimal damage (I purposely use "weak" glue so fins pop when they come down through trees instead of shattering).
