I have the TOS of ST on DVD.
I was watching the episode of
"The City On The Edge of Forever"
At end of the episode, there seven people beaming up?
WTF!
Six Pads, seven people!

I have that set also.

The best episode ever is the gangster spoof "A Piece Of The Action" with Bela Oxmyx...WHAT a name !

IMO, the bar fight scene with the Klingons in the episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" is my favorite.

And the interesting addition/update to it in the DS9 episode "Trials and Tribble-ations", of course. :)

Maybe it could be counted as a small change they made without knowing.

Happily, I am fluent in Trek-Rationalization. One transportee was probably shunted through the buffer network to a different transporter room for reception. Or maybe the pads merely represent "targets" but a volume the size of the chamber is fair game, especially if the transportee is carrying a communicator (as most were).

How did Roddenberry make this mistake?

To recap: McCoy beamed down earlier, in an unstable state of being. Those that followed (Kirk, Spock, Scott, Uhura, two security shirts) represent a nominal full "search party" sent to recover the crazed doctor.

I imagine this is covered in "These Are The Voyages vol 1", which I don't have. I expect it's an "uh-oh ... this is what the script gave us, and it's too late to fix it." So if I'm pointing to anyone, it'd be the showrunner (Gene Coon) and the script supervisor (I think that was John D.F. Black then, but not sure). Meanwhile, continuity was always a problem and it was getting late in the season and people were tired.

So ... seven in the transporter is annoying, but the Fallout Shelter sign on a building in the 1930s isn't? :-D That's the other thing that gets pointed out most. Memory Alpha has a nice list of continuity errors for the episode.

There's a lot of TOS episodes that I like a lot, but I think my all-time favorite is "Space Seed". When "The Wrath of Khan" was released was 1982 I didn't get to see it when it was first released because I was under the northern ice pack. Fortunately it was still in theaters when we got back home to Norfolk. It's STILL my favorite Star Trek movie.
