SpaceX Starship

First time designing a rocket.
Scaled it from pictures and entered it into Openrocket. CG was far behind CP. Had to make the tube longer, the fins bigger and add a lot of weight to the nose. I think even with the changes it still recognizable as the Starship.

Thanks to the guys on "Ask The Doctor" who answered my questions.

Waiting to see if it survives the maiden voyage before painting it.

Yep, it looks like a stand-off-scale Starship.

Let us know how it flies!

She passed the string test the other day.

Made a parachute out of lightweight nylon. The fabric store called it "windbreaker" nylon .

It's a 20" chute . Can someone recommend a proper cord length?

Hopefully she will fly better than the real Starship. They were doing a hardware test the other night and blew it up.

Methane leaked from the suppy hose. All it needed was an ignition source.

They already have the 5th iteration replacement nearly completed.

(nostalgic sigh) Ah, yes, windbreakers. I wore one regularly in the early 1970s...

G. Harry and Bill Stine in the Handbook of Model Rocketry, 7th Ed., say,

"My experience indicates that the shroud lines should never be shorter than the major dimensions of the parachute canopy. Thus, a 12-inch parachute should have shroud lines at least 12 inches long. I have also used shroud lines one and one-half times the major dimension of the canopy and won a few Parachute Duration contests with these." (pp. 182, 3)

So there's your minimum length. Other rocketeers have suggested 2 to 3 times the diameter of the chute.

Anybody else want to chime in here?

Our own Chris Michielssen (hcmbanjo) suggests the following method for avoiding tangled shroud lines (also see the excerpted diagram below):

I heard it was a malfunction with the GSE but didn't know any specifics. Thanks for that extra info.

Super happy with the parachute. Love the nylon and the cord I found.

And I get to make another one!
Because I made this one too small...
