On a positive note, we've flipped off the EPA in recent years producing big horsepower in small engines and still running 87 octane! Thanks to EPA regs, the famous Bandit Trans Am of the late 70's began with a pitiful 6.6L or 6.7L...can't remember (400 ci) that produced 180 hp and finally bumped up a little over 200 hp before the big block run ended. Today we have the little Mustang 5.0L (302 ci) pumping out 435 hp and 400 lb/ft of torque on pump gas! In order to get that kind of hp, you have to burn a lot of fuel no matter how efficient the engine is. The Mustang gets great highway mileage, but when the pedal gets stomped and the hp climbs, the injectors dump a lot of fuel in the cylinders! Those Mopar Hemi's can boast similar feats along with some of the LS engines. We get those great EPA mileage numbers on the window sticker, but nobody drives those beasts like grandma and actually gets those numbers.
