The TATER-I did not have fins on the Terrier!
Just cone-stabilized like the Recruit stage.
And only a single flight of that version, then they switched to finned Terriers.

The Terrier used Nike-Ajax fins that were clipped at the tip to reduce the sq-ft .
(see RotW drawings of Nike-Nike-Smoke and Nike-Iriquois for clipped fin dimensions)

The Talos fins were redesigned and the subsequent mounting position forced them slightly forward from the aft of the motor case.

Many flights were launched from Wallops under the name "RTE".
Translation "Roll Torque Evaluation".
Essentially they wrapped the re-entry nose cone with "tape" to measure the effects
of high speed re-entry ablation with different shaped tips.

I don't fly for competition, but it's neat to learn that a stack I set up isn't entirely fanciful.
