What Am I Missing Here???
People have regularly been paying $200 or more for the older Estes Space Shuttle kits. New boxed kits from Estes are just 70 bucks.

Two completely different kits. The new Shuttle has a Styrofoam glider and is 1/200 scale. The older kits were larger scale (I forget the exact scale; I think it was 1:162) and had a vacuum-formed plastic glider that was more detailed and had to be built.
So, bigger scale on the old ones, and you actually had to possess building chops to make the model. Or smaller, plastic and foam, ready to fly. |

You also have the fact that currently nobody offers a full-stack Space Shuttle builders kit. The last one was the Dr. Zooch kit, which was about the same scale (BT-60 based) as the current 1/200 Estes RTF, but better detail.
It always wonder how many unbuilt kits are still out there, and how many are getting built? I still have one in the bag. One day I'll build it! |

Apples and oranges. The Estes #1248 shuttle kit was a Master's Series, 1/162 scale, skill level 4 (or 5), scale model. IMO the new shuttle is a toy.

Yep, there ya go. No real comparison between the two in my book, either. A place for both, but certainly not comparable. Earl
