Default Estes Lumina & Sparrow questions

Hello All,

I'm working on clones of the Estes Lumina (see: http://www.spacemodeling.org/JimZ/est0897.htm ) and Sparrow (see: http://www.spacemodeling.org/JimZ/est0872.htm ) break-apart recovery rockets, and I'm looking for three part dimensions that are not given in their kit instructions. (Incidentally, Semroc www.semroc.com now has the laser-cut fiber fin sets for the Lumina [also sold as the differently-decorated Jammin', see: http://plans.rocketshoppe.com/estes/est0890/est0890.htm ] and the Sparrow.) The missing dimensions are:

[1] The length of the Lumina (and Jammin') mylar motor clip retainer ring;
[2] The length of the Lumina (and Jammin') launch lug, and;
[3] The length of the Sparrow launch lug

Many thanks to anyone who can help, and I'll pass these dimensions along to Scott so that everyone can access them as part of the plans data for these kits.

Blackshire;

As can be seen in the attached photo, the Sparrow launch lug is 1-1/4" long; I'm just dashing out for an early evening celebration, and when I return I should be able to dig up the other two.

John, I thank you very much! To "cover my bases," I ordered both 1" and 1.25" launch lugs from Semroc along with the laser-cut fiber fins and other parts. (I don't mind having the extra 1" launch lugs--like all extra rocket parts, they go to good use sooner or later.)

Blackshire;

The photos below show the Lumina mylar retainer is 3/8" long, and the Lumina launch lug is 1.25" long. The parts are the same in the #0890 Jammin'. I'm glad I was able to help. All the best for the New Year, and good luck with those clones.

THANK YOU--got 'em! I've relayed these dimensions (with acknowledgement to you as the source) to Scott so that they can be included in the kit plans archive for everyone to use.

Also, the 3/8" long mylar motor clip sleeve ring can be cloned using a 3/8" wide card stock strip coated on both sides (one side at a time) with a thin film of white glue or yellow glue (for durability), which (when dry) is then rolled into a ring and glued together. (I'd cut a longer length of the 3/8" wide strip than necessary, and secure its ends under heavy objects while the glue on each side dries so that the strip doesn't curl.) When dry, this ring is glued in place on the outside of the rocket's BT-5 body tube to secure the motor clip. The sleeve tube can be positioned so that its outside seam is hidden under one of the fins.

The New Year's fireworks display will start here in about 4-3/4 hours!

Semroc now stocks that hard-to-find Mylar clip retaining ring. Scratch builders and cloners everywhere rejoice.

The launch lug that the Lumina/Jammin' and the Sparrow used would have been LL-2A. With few exceptions, Estes kits featured either LL-2A (1.25" long) or LL-2B (2.375" long). Estes also made LL-2C (5" long) which was used on the Astron Cobra and the Astron Ranger, and LL-2D (8" long) which was used in the K-21 Gemini-Titan III and the K-29 Saturn 1B. (Very long kits such as the Cobra 1500 and the Blue Bird Zero were furnished with a pair of LL-2A's.) Early plans and kits mentioned LL-1A, LL-1B, etc., but as far as I can tell these were identical (dimensionally, at least) to the subsequent LL-2 series. The change in numbering may have been due to a change in the materials used to make them, but that's just a guess.

Estes still makes LL-2A and 2B, but back in the Damon years started calling them by their numeric catalog numbers (2321 and 2322). They have always made only one size (2") of 3/16" launch lug, which they called the Maxi-Rod Launch Lug. Currently, Estes also includes 1/4" lugs in their launch lug assortment pack.

Yes they do, for those BT-20 based models that utilized this part (a good example is the #2039 Space Racer). However, both the Lumina and the Jammin' are BT-5 based, and it doesn't seem that the BT-5 Mylar ring is available from Semroc just yet (at least I couldn't find it on the website).

Along with the BT-20 mylar ring, I'd love to see Semroc carry the BT-5 size one and a #7 size one. The #7 mylar ring would be perfect for the motor mounts of all of their Centuri Retro-Repro kits that use motor clips, including their Javelin kit (Centuri's last iteration of it had an external motor clip with a mylar ring).

Each new part costs about $200 for a minimum order, so we have to pick and choose carefully. The HR-7 is near the top of the list of new parts to add. The HR-5 is much further down.

This brings up an interesting point. We use the votes on the Classic Kits pages to guide us on which kits to produce. We need a similar page for suggested parts to add. This probably needs to be a separate thread, however.
