Default Garden Home, OR social distancing launch

COVID-19 regs in Oregon have made it difficult to do our usual monthly (May - November) model rocket launches.

We came up with a scheme to keep groups (these are "outreach" launches, attended by families and newcomers to the hobby and sometimes scout groups) in their own area, and use a "misfire alley" setup of Estes pads and controllers.

The pads and controllers were far enough apart that groups could load up while remaining a safe distance apart, and even launch while a group at the far end of the line was loading.

It all ended up working well. Everyone cooperated with signing in (contact tracing info), getting temps taken with an infrared thermometer, using sanitizer, masks, etc.

We'll fly again in November, and try to use the same scheme for a Boy Scout group launch in a few weeks.

The rules and launch procedures:

Garden Home Launch
Safety & Health Measures

1) Everyone will have temperature taken; people with temps 100.4 F or higher will be asked to leave
2) Each group/family must provide a contact name and phone number
3) Wearing a protective face mask is mandatory (ages 5 and up). Disposable masks provided.
4) Attendees must stay in family/Club groups of 10 or fewer. Each group will be assigned a flagged area, 20’ away from the adjacent group. When not signing up or racking rockets, please stay in your designated area.
5) Clean hands before / after using club equipment. Take advantage of hand sanitizer. Gloves also available.
6) If you need help, please send one or two people to the help desk.
7) If there are lines for the help desk or sign in table, families should stay 6’ apart.
PLEASE keep an eye on kids; it is sad that they can’t find new friends and play, but we have to be cautious to prevent spread of the virus.
Thank You!
Yes, we know that this all is a pain in the butt.

Garden Home Launch
Launch Procedure

To preserve required social distancing, we’ll be using this new procedure:
When your rocket is READY TO FLY (recovery system with wadding packed, motor and starter installed) have one or two folks in your group go to the check-in table. If there is a line, stay 6’ apart. Sign in. Return to your group’s reserved area.
Groups will be assigned a pad number and called to the launch pad as space is available. Wave if you need help hooking up your rocket.
Return to your group’s reserved area.
DO NOT chase or try to catch rockets. Wait for the all clear (“range is open!”) to be given before heading out to retrieve your rocket. Don’t pick up other people’s rockets.

Thank You!

Thanks for this, Stefan. We’re a little more tightly constrained for group sizes here (King County, WA) so I’ve not had a BEMRC launch since the restrictions started. But there are good ideas here.

I have a three-pad system for which I made up extension leads so I could set pads up ~20 feet apart to have sort of cross between the club rack and a misfire alley setup....but so far haven’t been able to try it out.

Looked like a well organized event while also keeping everyone safe.
