Can an up-scaled unit, suitable for HPR Rockets ( 38mm, 54mm, 75mm, & 98mm mandrels ) be far behind ?

I cringe at what the "price tag" might be for that !

Bob it is a great item. I have not had a chance to handle the new version, I have one of the older ones and really like having it. I bet you will too.

Interesting gadget that's for sure.

I guess I had better build a rocket and try it out.

Now that I have one of these devices I am awaiting the appearance of THE Monolith before me which will signal higher rocketry beings (Hard-core NAR competitors? Internats fliers? Elon Musk?) that I have advanced up the rocketry evolutionary scale.

Maybe....but you will find your newly-built models fly straighter and with little or no roll consistently once you get the hang of using it....

I don't know if Dan has more of these available or not, but I took a shot of yesterday's fin installation for a couple of reasons.

This is the FlisKits GigaBucks. It has six fins that go under the ring, and this is the first time I've used the protractor on the end of the spindle to set fins that are not at the 3- or 4-fin detents.

Also, instead of the Delp clamps (constant force springs) I've taken to using the short small Berna Assembler to clamp the fin to the guide plate as it has a much longer reach. I learned about these clamps in one of Ted Cochran's build threads on that other forum. They can be had from a bookbinding and art supplies company called Talas. The one in the picture is the 3 inch jaw, 3 inch beam variant. https://www.talasonline.com/Berna-Assembly-Clamps

Bernard,

I am checking with Dan and i will let you know.

Thanks for the info about the Berna Assembler. Very clever and really inexpensive. I just ordered a set to try out. Thanks.

I use these all the time when I'm building large paper models, like the 1/50th Soyuz I flew for Virtual NARAM in 2020. They allow you to apply the precise amount of pressure needed for any particular job.

Folks,

I just met with Dan and, unfortunately, he has no fin jigs left. At this time he is uncertain if he will make more.

When Art Rose made the early ones (early to mid 1980's), I considered getting one. But at $150 I could not justify it. Then I finally decided to get one.... but the price went up to $200. Some time later, I finally decided OK, I'll spend $200 to get one... and it had gone up to $300, IIRC.

So, I never got one.

I may be off on the exact prices (maybe $150, 250, 350?), but the point is, every time I finally was ready to buy, the price jumped too much for me to justify paying that much extra. Of course I regret never getting one, especially not getting one when it was $150.

I did come up with my own jig, which works OK for one fin at a time. For 3 fins, or 4 fins, using a visual sighting disk (below the model) with fin alignment markings, to rotate to the next location (by eye) in 90 to 120 degree increments, rather than having a mechanical rotation method with keyed stops. It is nowhere near as good as Art's jigs, but it was what I was able to make up without capability to make precision parts like that.

I loaned that jig to Carl McLawhorn in the mid-2000's, to study in case he might be able to produce it as a Jig for Semroc to sell. But he was unable to come up with a way to fabricate that kind of jig without costing too much to be viable as a product for Semroc to sell.
