Bob,

IIRC, creating a rocket with the lowest price in and of itself wasn't the challenge this time. If we were only trying to create an inexpensive rocket, Solo already has his "Slidewhistle" design, which is about as inexpensive as one can get.

The challenge was to create a rocket
  • Using SEMROC components exclusively
  • Using the A10-3T engine
  • Having a deployment velocity (Dv) of 10 FPS or less

Those criteria needed the power of RockSim to find a combination of components that fit all three aspects in one design. The models are intended for youthful fingers, which is why Solo mentioned laser-cut fins, as well as simplicity, in that it really is a plug-n-go type of design. You just glue a few parts together without having to do any major cutting. With these four designs, unless I've missed something, the only use of a knife is in cutting slits in the engine tubes for the hooks. Everything else is already pre-cut by SEMROC, just waiting to be assembled.

Understand, I'm not fond of ARF or RTF designs, whether they're rockets, RC airplanes, or RC cars. I prefer to build, and I think Solo feels the same. I'm not slamming anyone elses stuff here, everyone in this hobby business produces something to fill a niche and satisfy a demand. Solo's other unspoken (4th) criteria, however, was to get these young folks familiar with typical construction items, like body tubes and nose cones and rings and so forth, so that they would understand how they're used and why one component is selected over another. This is the information we all take for granted, but young folks don't yet know.

Man, it's like you're reading my mind or something...

You beat me to the post by less than one minute.

I liked this challenge, as it made me start thinking about what really happens with a rocket in flight, and how we arrive at a design to meet a specific set of goals. We need to come up with a series of special challenges, both for technical and for visual reasons. RockSim shows us what we need, but not always why.

Hey, did you have a specific fin-set in mind with your designs, or were you thinking the students might pick any sort that suit them?

You mean for these four? I just used what RockSim threw out as a starting point, then fiddled with the corners a bit until I had something that brought the performance into the desired range. I realized that what RockSim offered would be very easy to cut in the event you allowed the students to use a hobby knife (and a steel ruler), since all of the edges were straight lines. They could also be exported into SVG format, and imported into Corel Draw for conversion into a Version 10 CDR file (which is what Carl needs for his death-ray).

Default Corel Draw Fin Sets

Here are the fin patterns imported into Corel Draw 12, and saved as a V10 CDR file. Since YORF doesn't handle many CDR files yet , I've put it into a ZIP file. Also attached is a JPG of the patterns.

You've probably already got the designs you need from Craig, but would you consider tube fins to be traditional construction? That might be a fun way to go for the cluster design.

Sure.

The challenge wasn't for Craig alone... I'd love to see a variety of designs.

The challenge was meant for everyone!

Absolutely! Please submit your answer to the challenge, as mine is not necessarily the most creative or exciting. My answer is, by admission, just a simple solution meant to fit the requirements. Solo wasn't just asking me alone, he was looking for a variety of ideas from anyone wanting to have a go at it.
